Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson admitted that he was surprised by what happened to one player’s career after predicting that he would become a “top” talent.
Ferguson has been all too familiar with managing the best in class and the former United boss admitted that he coached only four true world-class players at the club.
The 81-year-old Scotsman, whose reaction to United’s failure to land Jude Bellingham was revealed, called it time on his legendary career back in 2013.
Ferguson ended his managerial career on a high note by leading United to their last Premier League title, with the Scot still supporting the club from behind the scenes.
The legendary ex-United manager also wanted to build for the future and Ferguson had even identified key signings that he wanted to make ahead of his retirement.
Ferguson failed in his bid to land some players during his time at United and the ex-Aberdeen boss also revealed one legendary player he wished he had managed.
Despite some of his shortcomings on transfer targets, Ferguson etched his name in the history books and even received an incredible compliment from Pep Guardiola.
Ferguson, who has remained an ever-present figure at Old Trafford, has kept a close watch on the current crop of talent and one player’s career surprised him quite a bit.

Ferguson’s reaction to Dele Alli’s career
Dele Alli, who was linked with United in the past, has endured a stagnating career and rapid decline in form since he burst onto the scene at Tottenham.
The 27-year-old left Spurs in 2022 and completed a January deadline-day move to Everton, with the ex-Tottenham star unable to see a turn of fortune in his career.
Alli endured a disappointing run in his first six months at Goodison Park and was shipped off to Turkish side Besiktas on loan in the 2022 summer transfer window.
The former England star’s dwindling form saw his spell at Besiktas take an ugly turn, with ex-Besiktas manager Senol Gunes publicly slating Alli over his performances.
Alli’s spell with Besiktas was cut short after a hip injury he sustained at the Super Lig club and he returned to Everton last season as he recovered from his injury.
Speaking to LADbible TV in 2021, Ferguson sat down with United legend Gary Neville and the former Red Devils boss was asked questions from fans.
Ferguson was asked by one of the off-screen crew if there were any players that he wished he had bought at United and he subsequently opened up about Alli.
“I thought Dele Alli was going to be a top player, I must admit,” he said at the time.
“I don’t know what’s happened there.”
The fall of ex-United target Alli
Alli’s fall from his Tottenham days is a sad sight for any fan and the Everton player’s declining career continues to take a nightmarish turn at almost every opportunity.
Everton splashed out a potential fee worth up to £40m for Alli, who has struggled to rediscover the type of form that caught the eye of Ferguson in the first place.
Toffees boss Sean Dyche has left the door open for Alli, but it remains to be seen if the former England international can turn his career around for the better.
Former United manager Jose Mourinho, who recently opened up about his time at Old Trafford, previously revealed that even Ferguson had urged him to sign Alli.
Speaking in Amazon Prime’s 2020 ‘All or Nothing’ documentary on Spurs, he said: “Sir Alex Ferguson gave me only one bit of advice in two and a half years [at United]: buy Dele Alli.
“That guy, with that mentality, the way he plays, the aggression he has in mind. This guy is [a] Manchester United player. Buy Dele Alli.”
