Scott McTominay sends message after legendary Scotland goal, Harry Maguire responds

Former Manchester United star Scott McTominay has made headlines for helping Scotland qualify for the World Cup with a superb goal.

Scott McTominay has become a Napoli ‘idol’ since leaving Manchester United, and now he has etched his name into the history books on the international stage too.

With the 2026 World Cup around the corner, Scotland had to win their final qualifying match against Denmark to book their spot in the tournament.

While Patrick Dorgu and Rasmus Hojlund scored for the visitors, Scotland won 4-2 with McTominay scoring the best goal of his career.

It sparked conversation among United fans questioning why McTominay was sold.

Harry Maguire and Alejandro Garnacho reply to Scott McTominay

As a Carrington graduate who had been with United since early childhood, McTominay continues to support United from afar, and he remains in touch with several former teammates.

After his sensational Scotland display, the 28-year-old took to Instagram to celebrate qualifying for the 2026 World Cup.

“USA baby, Scotland are coming,” Scott McTominay wrote. The comments were filled with current and former United players, including Harry Maguire and Alejandro Garnacho.

Hojlund was on the receiving end of McTominay’s incredible bicycle kick, and he congratulated his Napoli teammate, writing: “Congrats mate. Well done”.

Maguire replied: “Go on the boy”, while Garnacho wrote “Wowwwwww”.

Scott McTominay was Scotland’s star in qualifying

Scotland entered Group C of World Cup qualifying as the third seed, but ended up topping the group.

McTominay played every single minute of Scotland’s qualifying campaign, playing everywhere across midfield from defensive midfielder to playmaker and sometimes even out wide.

He scored two goals and picked up one assist in Scotland’s qualifying campaign, and can now expect to play a key role in the World Cup next summer.

The World Cup group stage draw will take place on Friday, 5 December.
