Manchester United fans could not overlook one major elephant in the room after Scott McTominay’s latest exploits for Scotland in the 4-2 win over Denmark.
Scott McTominay, who left Manchester United in 2024 and was signed by Serie A side Napoli, had an early impact for his country in Tuesday’s Group C clash.
The 28-year-old Scotland star scored a sensational overhead kick in only the third minute to put Steve Clarke’s men into the lead for their crucial World Cup qualifier.
Rasmus Hojlund cancelled out McTominay’s opener in the second half after he scored Denmark’s equaliser before Lawrence Shankland restored Scotland’s lead.
Which Man Utd player has most chance of playing for England at the World Cup?
Patrick Dorgu added his name to the scoresheet in the 82nd minute for 10-man Denmark at Hampden Park, which left Steve Clarke’s side chasing the winner.
Scotland would hit back deep into injury time after Kieran Tierney and Kenny McLean both scored against Denmark and sealed an emphatic 4-2 win for Scotland on Tuesday.

Man Utd fans’ powerful reaction to Scott McTominay’s performance for Scotland against Denmark speaks volumes
Scotland punched their ticket to the 2026 World Cup in North America after a nail-biting result over second-place Denmark in the final Group C encounter.
Manchester United fans were baffled on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, over the Red Devils offloading Scott McTominay for Manuel Ugarte.
One X user wrote: “Made up for McTominay [and] Scotland qualifying for the World Cup. But FML, how on earth did we end up selling this legend for Ugarte of all people?!”
“We replaced this absolute monster McTominay with Ugarte,” another said.
A third United fan tweeted: “Still can’t believe we sold McTominay for Ugarte.”
Someone else commented: “Selling Scott McTominay to fund [the] signing of Manuel Ugarte has to be the worst bit of business a club has ever done.”
A fifth Red Devils supporter asked: “Why the hell did we sell McTominay to buy Ugarte?”
“Getting rid of McTominay for Ugarte was such a mad decision,” somebody else argued.
While a seventh added: “It is official… McTominay is 100 [per cent] better than Ugarte.”
And an eighth posted: “A curse on the house of everyone who wanted Ugarte over McTominay.”
Manuel Ugarte has struggled to sell Man Utd fans on him being a better replacement than Scott McTominay
United agreed a deal worth £50.5m to bring Manuel Ugarte to Old Trafford from Paris Saint-Germain, which effectively sealed McTominay’s fate at the club in 2024.
A United youth academy product, McTominay was sold to Napoli for a £25.7m fee after potentially facing fewer minutes at United following Manuel Ugarte’s transfer.
However, Ugarte has struggled to establish himself as a regular in the United first team, both under former Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag and later Ruben Amorim.
McTominay, on the other hand, has been able to thrive under Antonio Conte at Napoli and continued to play a starring role for Steve Clarke’s Scotland side.
