Patrick Dorgu and Rasmus Hojlund score for Denmark and it is not enough to seal World Cup qualification

Manchester United duo Rasmus Hojlund and Patrick Dorgu were both on target for Denmark in their World Cup showdown with Scotland.

And if you had told Danish fans this before the game, they would have hoped it would be enough to book their place at the World Cup.

However, they fell to a 4-2 defeat to group rivals Scotland, who were inspired by a third minute overhead kick from former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay.

Denmark fought back to twice equalise, before two injury-time goals from Scotland won the game, and the group.

Denmark drop down to playoff spot

Scotland’s qualification as group winners is a great achievement for them, while Denmark are now uncertain to make the finals.

Denmark won one game fewer than Scotland, paying the price for last week’s 2-2 draw against Belarus.

If they had won that game, then they still would have won the group on goal difference even with this loss.

Patrick Dorgu’s goal

Patrick Dorgu‘s goal was a well-taken side-footed effort from inside the box, tying the game at 2-2 late on.

It was his only shot at goal, while he also created three goalscoring chances during the game.

Denmark’s manager had claimed he wanted to see Dorgu step up with Joakim Maehle unavailable.

The loss won’t reflect well on him, but Dorgu was one of Denmark’s more effective players, at least going forward.

Whether he retains his place for the playoffs next spring, is another matter.

Rasmus Hojlund substituted late

Manchester United loanee Rasmus Hojlund was substituted with the score at 2-2 after an erratic performance.

Hojlund scored a penalty. This was the only one of his seven attempts at goal that found the back of the net.

Just one of his six open play efforts tested the goalkeeper.
