Ex-Red Devils interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy received a touching message from one former Manchester United player ahead of his exit from Old Trafford.

Ruud van Nistelrooy took charge of the Red Devils for a four-match run during an interim managerial spell after Erik ten Hag was sacked in late October.

The 48-year-old Dutchman had returned to Old Trafford in the summer and was appointed as assistant manager under Erik ten Hag ahead of the 2024-25 season.

However, Manchester United’s poor start to the season saw Ten Hag dismissed and Van Nistelrooy was installed as an interim manager for the Premier League club.

Van Nistelrooy bowed out of Old Trafford on Monday with an undefeated record as interim manager, with the United legend picking up three wins and one draw.

The former United assistant manager ended his reign on Sunday with a 3-0 win over Leicester City in the Premier League ahead of the November international break.

Manchester United on Monday confirmed that Ruud van Nistelrooy would leave Old Trafford after the arrival of former Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim.

Ruben Amorim was tipped to bring his own coaching staff to Old Trafford and the new United manager did not retain the services of Van Nistelrooy.

United also confirmed that Rene Hake, Jelle ten Rouwelaar and Pieter Morel were among the coaching staff to leave the Red Devils alongside Van Nistelrooy.

Amorim, who is widely admired for his work at Sporting CP, had previously revealed that he would hold talks with Van Nistelrooy once he arrived at United.

The 39-year-old Portuguese manager agreed a deal earlier this month to succeed Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford after United triggered his release clause.

United’s Instagram page shared a tribute video for Van Nistelrooy ahead of the Dutchman’s departure and ex-Red Devils defender Eric Bailly reacted to the post.

“The [legend] is good and humble. Thanks, Ruud,” Eric Bailly wrote in response.

Speaking after the 3-0 win over Leicester City, Van Nistelrooy opened up on the spine-tingling reception he received from the Old Trafford faithful on the weekend.

“The connection is there. It’s what United is about,” he said, as per Manchester United’s official website.

“Being together and getting results. I’m proud of that and thankful to the supporters. It was [a] beautiful moment.

“To come back to the club and I’ve started working, and then doing the four games. All at home, getting some good results and some good goals.

“There are some good bits to build on. To close it down with this, it’s special. My dad was here, my son. So, it was a fantastic moment.”
