Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has been told why one of his players “would struggle in all aspects” at Old Trafford and why they are now thriving.
Ruben Amorim eased the pressure on himself ever so slightly on the weekend with Manchester United’s 2-2 Premier League comeback draw against Everton.
The Red Devils travelled to Goodison Park on Saturday and Amorim’s men found themselves 2-0 down against Everton going into half-time.
Goals from Beto and Abdoulaye Doucoure put David Moyes’ side in control of the Premier League clash before United mounted a late comeback at Goodison Park.
A Bruno Fernandes free-kick pulled United back into the contest in the 72nd minute and Manuel Ugarte found the stunning equaliser only eight minutes later.
United are 15th in the Premier League table amid a disastrous 2024-25 season and the Red Devils sit 13 points clear of the relegation zone with 12 matches remaining.
The Red Devils have only managed eight league wins from 26 matches and Amorim’s side are 13 points adrift from the Premier League top four.
Man Utd star away from Amorim
Red Devils manager Ruben Amorim oversaw the departure of different first-team Manchester United players during the January transfer window.
The high-profile departures included the loan moves of Marcus Rashford and Antony to Premier League side Aston Villa and La Liga outfit Real Betis respectively.
Antony struggled to make a name for himself at Old Trafford after United splashed out an initial £82m fee on the former Ajax star in 2022.
The 25-year-old Brazilian played under former United manager Erik ten Hag at Ajax, but the Dutchman was unable to unlock Antony’s true potential at the Red Devils.
Antony, who is on loan until the end of the season, left Old Trafford last month and the United winger has impressed so far during the early part of his Real Betis spell.
The Brazil international has netted three times and registered two assists in his six appearances for Real Betis in the 2024-25 campaign.
Speaking to The Sun, Betis legend Gabino Rodriguez said: “It is obviously a bit too soon for a full assessment, but this footballer has class, no doubt about it.
“Technically he is a very gifted player. The initial impression is he’s landed on his feet at Betis.
“He scored in his first game; I can see [the] hunger in him and the fans are very happy.”
‘Problem’ at Man Utd for Antony
Real Betis reportedly agreed to cover a large majority of Antony’s wages as part of the loan deal, with the United loanee now reviving his career away from Old Trafford.
Gabino Rodriguez has now claimed that the reason why Antony is thriving with the Spanish club came down to the “problem” with the coaching he previously received.
“Personally I have no doubts that Antony will adapt really well to Pellegrini’s system because the manager likes to play attacking football,” he told the newspaper.
“Betis continuously go down the wings and Antony is the type of player who suits this coach well.
“Under another one, he would struggle in all aspects, and that’s what happened at United. For me, Antony’s problem wasn’t him, but a coaching one.”
