Ruben Amorim’s appointment as Manchester United manager faces one potential stumbling block.

Things have been moving very quickly at Manchester United over the past 24 hours since Ineos decided to sack Erik ten Hag as manager.

Just hours after his dismissal, it was reported that Sporting manager Ruben Amorim agreed to join United.

The 39-year-old manager emerged as the leading candidate to replace Ten Hag and negotiations were advancing quickly.

Reports from Portugal suggested that United were one step away from Amorim becoming manager after he agreed to the club’s project.

There has been confusion around Amorim’s release clause at Sporting, and both clubs are still in negotiations to try and settle a final agreement.

Ruben Amorim ‘torn’ about joining Man United mid-season

Everything seems to be going according to plan in United’s pursuit of Ruben Amorim, with Fabrizio Romano reporting that the Sporting manager had given the “green light” for the move to go ahead.

Amorim is set to take charge of Sporting on Tuesday evening in what many are anticipating could be his farewell match.

However, a report from The Independent now claims that Amorim immediately leaving Sporting to join United is not a guarantee.

They claim three things are still being negotiated by the two clubs – Amorim’s coaching staff, the timing of his appointment, and his release fee with Sporting Lisbon.

It adds that Amorim’s preference was to leave Sporting at the end of the season and that his representatives have even suggested a deal where he joins United at the end of the season. He is “genuinely torn” on leaving now.

Ineos and United’s new football leadership are adamant they want him to start immediately, but talks are still ongoing.

Ruud van Nistelrooy takes charge of Man United

After Ten Hag’s sacking, it was announced that his assistant Ruud van Nistelrooy became interim manager.

In an ideal world, United want Amorim in charge against Chelsea on Sunday afternoon, meaning Van Nistelrooy’s only game in charge would be against Leicester City in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday afternoon.

But that is assuming that Amorim agrees to leave Sporting mid-season, something he appears hesitant to do.

If United are forced to wait, Van Nistelrooy may have a much bigger job on his hands than he first anticipated.
