Manchester United have parted ways with Erik ten Hag, as the Dutchman’s reign at Old Trafford comes to an end.
Erik ten Hag is no longer the manager of Manchester United, as the club confirmed on Monday morning after an extremely bad result against West Ham in the Premier League.
Now, the next obvious question looms – who is next? So far, it appears to be Ruben Amorim of Sporting Lisbon, who is close to United.

However, in our eyes – the ideal candidate is already long gone.
Thomas Tuchel was the ideal Erik ten Hag replacement
Thomas Tuchel was appointed England manager on the 18th of October 2024 – in a managerial move that shocked the world of football.
Taking on the role of England manager is no easy task, but if there was a manager up to it – it’d be the German.
Tuchel would have been absolutely perfect to succeed Ten Hag. He knows the Premier League, a massive fan of English football, a fantastic man manager – and most of all, knows how to win.
Ten Hag was lucky Tuchel got the England role, but now a month on, it just looks silly from United’s perspective they never went for him. He was 100% the ideal candidate.
Thomas Tuchel’s managerial record:
- Mainz: 72 wins, 46 draws, and 64 losses in 182 games
- Paris Saint-Germain: Won Ligue 1 in his first season, and was runner-up in the Coupe de France in 2018–19
- Chelsea: Finished fourth in the Premier League, reached the FA Cup final, and won the UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup, and UEFA Super Cup
- England: Will become the 16th permanent manager of the England men’s national team, and the third non-Englishman to hold the role

Manchester United now look to Ruben Amorim
There appear to be a number of managerial candidates that Manchester United can choose from, but the main culprit is now Ruben Amorim.
| Managerial career | |||
|---|---|---|---|
| 2018–2019 | Casa Pia | ||
| 2019 | Braga B | ||
| 2019–2020 | Braga | ||
| 2020– | Sporting CP | ||
Amorim is seemingly one step away from Old Trafford, which is exciting considering the quick turnaround. Whilst we do prefer Tuchel, Amorim is certainly an intriguing second prospect.
One thing is for certain, if Amorim takes the reigns at the helm, he’ll need time. With a short managerial career thus far – he is by no means the finished product.
In the meantime, RVN will take charge, as Manchester United take on Leicester City at Old Trafford on Wednesday. After that, only time will tell.
