Manchester United won a fifth straight Europa League game on Thursday to progress to the round of 16.

Ruben Amorim’s fortunes are certainly turning, with the past few weeks seeing five wins from seven and currently a three-game winning streak.

This is a marked improvement from Manchester United, after the terrible form under Amorim during December. However, in Europe, things have been far kinder to Amorim.

Amorim has led United to a win in each of his first four European nights as United head coach, with the latest being Thursday’s 2-0 win over FCSB.

Kobbie Mainoo was United’s standout performer, and Amorim has the 19-year-old to thank as he ties a record set by Sir Alex Ferguson back in 1990.

Ruben Amorim wins first four games in Europe for Manchester United

After beating Rangers 2-1 last week, Amorim had drawn level with Sir Matt Busby and Sir Alex for winning his first three games as United boss.

Now, Amorim has gone clear of Sir Matt in this regard, standing alone with Sir Alex as the only two in United history to win their first four games at the helm in a major European competition.

This record is an impressive one considering the European record United had under Erik ten Hag prior to Amorim taking charge.

Things are certainly looking up for the Portuguese coach, with United winning three successive games for the first time under Amorim. It could yet get better.

Amorim can surpass Sir Alex Ferguson record in the round of 16

Despite how impressive this is, Amorim will want to go one further and stand alone as the only United boss to win his first five in Europe – which he can do.

Sir Alex drew his fifth game 1-1 with Montpellier – which means Amorim has the chance to make history the next time he has a European game, in the Europa League round of 16.

United will face one of four teams in the Europa League, dependent on who progresses through the play-offs and which side United are placed on at a subsequent draw.

Between now and the round of 16, United have a handful of winnable games which should allow some form and momentum to be built.

The way things are currently going, United could be set for an exciting end to the season with the FA Cup and Europa League trophies no doubt achievements Amorim is thinking he can achieve.
