Manchester United have been having a torrid time domestically, but Europe has been a whole other story.

The start of Ruben Amorim’s era has been far from perfect.

Implementing a new high-intensity system mid-season was never going to be easy, and Manchester United have paid the price for not making the change in the summer.

However, while domestic form has been woeful, Europe has been something of an escape for United. In seven Europa League games this season, the Red Devils are unbeaten.

United have drawn three and won four – including most recently a 2-1 win over Rangers at Old Trafford.

Amorim’s win over the Scottish giants saw him all but ensure progression to the last 16, but also match records set by some Old Trafford legends.

Ruben Amorim wins third straight game in Europe

Before Thursday night’s game, Amorim had the chance to match records.

By defeating Rangers, he would join Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Matt Busby in the history books – not bad company to keep.

Beating Rangers means Amorim has won his first three European games in charge of United.

The opposition levels in Europe have been a lot kinder than domestically, but if history is to repeat itself with how the two others ended up, we won’t mind Amorim’s early struggles.

Amorim was also the third United boss to win his first two, after beating Viktoria Plzen last month. If United are to have success this season, it seems like it will come in Europe.

Victory next week against FCSB would see Amorim match Sir Alex’s record of four in a row – while beating Sir Matt.

Manchester United must go all out for Europa League

The remainder of this season will simply be about Amorim working with his team and preparing it for the 2025/26 season.

With the Premier League a lost cause and United likely to finish around mid-table – cup competitions could be Amorim’s only source of joy. Therefore, considering the form in Europe, going all out in the Europa League seems likely.

United are already through, but a point against FCSB next week will be enough to skip the playoffs and go directly to the last 16. Amorim has highlighted the importance of finishing in the top eight in the league phase.

“It’s very important. If you look at the schedule, it’s two weeks with one game – it’s big to prepare for the Premier League, so it’s important to stay in the top eight.”

Therefore, we can expect Amorim to go strong next week in Romania.
