Ineos prepared to accept gigantic loss as Man United set new price tag for Harry Maguire

A new report suggests that former Manchester United captain Harry Maguire will be on the market again in the January transfer window.

Harry Maguire came close to leaving Manchester United in 2023 after interest from Premier League rivals West Ham.

The England international had been struggling for game time at Old Trafford and United had accepted a £30m bid for Maguire from the Hammers.

However, the West Ham deal collapsed at the eleventh hour due to the compensation owed to Maguire by United.

Maguire stayed put in Manchester but is now in the final year of his contract at the club, meaning January will be the final chance to cash in on him before he can leave as a free agent in the summer.

Man United set new Harry Maguire price tag

Ineos made it clear over the summer that Maguire is no longer viewed as a first-choice centre-back.

United signed Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro to strengthen at centre-back, while Lisandro Martinez remains ahead of Maguire in Erik ten Hag‘s pecking order.

Maguire has made nine appearances this season though, and ironically saved Ten Hag from the sack by scoring the last-minute equaliser against Porto in the Europa League. The Dutchman then chose to start Maguire alongside Jonny Evans against Aston Villa.

But a new report from the Daily Star suggests that Maguire is viewed as “dispensable” by United chiefs and that he will be put up for sale in January.

They claim that United will listen to offers as little as £10m for Maguire, which would represent a gigantic loss from the £80m paid to sign him from Leicester City in 2019.

United wanted £30m for Maguire as recently as last season, but with his contract now coming to an end his value has continued to plummet.

Harry Maguire exit is best for all parties

After stripping Maguire of the captaincy and investing in younger centre-back options, Ten Hag has made it clear that he wants to move on from the 31-year-old.

Maguire deserves credit for how he has reacted to criticism at United and his attitude can not be questioned, but for the club to advance and evolve they need better options at the back.

In Martinez, De Ligt and Yoro, United have a good core of young, modern defenders who can help to implement Ten Hag’s style by playing a high line.

There should be no doubt that Maguire will stay in the Premier League and impress elsewhere, but leaving the club would be best for all parties – whether that’s in January for a slashed price or in the summer as a free agent.
