Ruben Amorim finally apologises to Manchester United fans and admits to mistakes

Ruben Amorim kept complete radio silence after being sacked by Manchester United back in January.

Manchester United fans supported Ruben Amorim through the club’s worst-ever Premier League finish in 2024/25. At the end of the season, he promised “good times were ahead”.

But halfway through 2025/26, Amorim was sacked following a fallout with the club hierarchy.

There was no goodbye message from Amorim, never mind an apology. Now that Amorim has been hired by AC Milan, he has no choice but to answer questions about his Old Trafford spell.

Ruben Amorim apologises to Man United fans

Ahead of his first day as Milan boss, Amorim admitted he was overwhelmed by the size of the challenge at United.

Tuesday was his first day of pre-season training in Milan, and in his first press conference, Amorim finally addressed United supporters.

“The only thing I can say is that I learnt a lot and did make some mistakes.

“I am sorry that I didn’t have the opportunity to say something to the United fans at that moment.

“I’m really proud to have been their coach for a year.”

Ruben Amorim left Man United better than where he started

I know that the general consensus about Amorim was that he was a complete failure at United, but that is not necessarily the case.

United were 13th when Amorim was hired, and sixth when Amorim was sacked.

Amorim also oversaw United’s best transfer window in a decade by bringing in the likes of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko and Senne Lammens without the lure of European football.

Amorim made mistakes, there is no denying it. CEO Omar Berrada was right when he said Amorim cornered himself at United with his stubbornness.

But Amorim still had the dressing room on his side and the performances were improving. At Milan, he has a chance to salvage his reputation as one of Europe’s most exciting young coaches.
