Roy Keane says he ‘100 per cent’ deserved one thing that happened to him post-Man Utd career

Sky Sports pundit Roy Keane told Gary Neville and Jaap Stam that he “deserved” one thing that happened to him in his post-Manchester United career.

Keane enjoyed a prolific playing career at Old Trafford before his falling out with former manager Sir Alex Ferguson and subsequent departure from United in 2005.

The 52-year-old no-nonsense Irishman briefly played for Celtic before his retirement in 2006, with Keane later opening up about one regret over his time at the club.

Following on from his playing career, Keane ventured into management and started his career at Sunderland before he resigned from his post after 27 months in charge.

The former United captain would be appointed Ipswich Town manager in 2009 and endured an ill-fated 20-month reign at the club before he was sacked in 2011.

Despite being linked with a return to management, Keane never returned to the dugout as an outright manager and took on other roles post-Ipswich Town.

The Irishman was Martin O’Neill’s assistant manager for the Republic of Ireland, with Keane later holding the same role at Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest.

Keane on his turbulent Ipswich spell

Keane recently appeared on The Overlap alongside Neville, Jamie Carragher, Ian Wright and Jaap Stam, with the latter opening up on his relationship with Ferguson.

Stam opened up during the show about Erik ten Hag’s best signing at United so far and his thoughts on the Dutchman’s struggles at Old Trafford this season.

The United legend, who also delivered his verdict on one United player, told Neville and Keane who would be his ideal centre-back partner from the Premier League.

Keane opened up to Stam and Co about his time as manager of Ipswich Town and believes that he “deserved the sack” over his poor handling at the club.

“Of course, you’ve got to see it from both sides, 100 per cent,” he said on the Stick to Football show.

“You can criticise owners all you want, but sometimes owners do give the manager the backing.

“And if your recruitment is not right, again, when I was down at Ipswich, I brought in players and I look back and I deserved the sack, absolutely 100 per cent.

“Could I have done with a little bit longer? Yes, of course, but you look at the players I brought in, and I didn’t win enough games and you go, yeah, that’s no blame on the owner for that, absolutely not.

“But you hope sometimes when you’re going through a difficult spell that you get that backing.”

Keane added: “Yeah, so you have to take responsibility.”

Keane could still return to management

Keane found success on TV after his ill-fated spells at Sunderland and Ipswich Town and the United legend remains a staple addition to Sky Sports’ punditry team.

However, the former United star has flirted with the idea of returning to management and it’s difficult to say if Keane would make a sensational return.

There are no doubts about the incredible pedigree of his playing career, but his disappointing runs as a manager have cast doubt over Keane’s credentials.

But time is still on Keane’s side and the ex-Red Devils midfielder might consider one last throw of the dice if the ‘right’ opportunity presented itself to him.
