Manchester United have had some of the finest centre-backs ever to grace the Premier League.

Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Steve Bruce, Gary Pallister and many more have all graced the Old Trafford turf over the years, cementing legendary status at the club.

Another top talent in the club’s history has to be the towering Dutch centre-back, Jaap Stam, who was brought in by Sir Alex Ferguson in 1998.

Gary Neville and Roy Keane pick ‘ideal-centre-back partner’ for Jaap Stam

In an all-new episode of The Overlap podcast, Gary Neville, Roy Keane, Ian Wright and Jamie Carragher sat the iconic centre-half down to talk about everything to do with his career, Manchester United at the moment and so much more.

One of the topics that came up in conversation was posed by Neville, who asked Stam who would be his ‘ideal centre-back partner’ from Premier League history.

Neville first gave his input about who he’d partner the ex-Man Utd ace with:

“I think I’m going to go, John Terry,” says Neville.

Keane then gives his verdict, agreeing with Wright: “I’m going with you [gestures to Wright]. Tony Adams.”

Jaap Stam disagrees with both

The Dutchman then have his verdict on who’d like to be paired up with, opting for a different choice from both his former teammates.

Stam says: “I’d keep it Dutch. It would be a good partnership. I like the other ones as well, but I think Virgil [van Dijk] is a very good player.”

Stam and the Liverpool centre-back would be a frightening pair. They would simply tower over strikers.

He had the privilege of playing with some of the best to do it anyway at Manchester United, and will always be remembered for his contributions to the club – albeit his time being cut horrendously short at Old Trafford.
