Roy Keane believes Casemiro could play new role for Man Utd, says Erik ten Hag ‘wrong’ to take him off vs Liverpool

Former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane believes that Casemiro could still have a role to play at Old Trafford.

Manchester United midfielder Casemiro remained at Old Trafford during the summer and showed a couple of positive early signs, particularly against Manchester City in the Community Shield and the Premier League game against Fulham.

However, Casemiro was very poor for United against Liverpool and has been roundly criticised for his performance against the Red Devils’ biggest rivals.

Casemiro has been linked to Galatasaray and his time as a regular starter in the United first team could be coming to an end with Manuel Ugarte signing on deadline day.

Roy Keane believes Casemiro will have different role in the team

Speaking on The Overlap, former United midfielder Roy Keane believes that Casemiro still has a place in the team despite his dismal performances.

“I wouldn’t be writing players off at that age,” Keane said. “I’ve been there when you get to that age, everyone is quick to criticise you and say your legs are gone but I wouldn’t be writing him off yet.

“I also think that maybe his role in the team, if he gets back in, will be changed and could be a bit higher up the pitch.

“He struggles to get around the pitch but going forward he does have a nice eye for a pass and is good on set pieces.

“I also believe that on Sunday when he was taken off at half-time it was the wrong decision and I feel sorry for him.”

United would be wrong to push Casemiro higher up the pitch

With the injury to Mason Mount, it could be argued that Bruno Fernandes is perhaps the only attack minded midfielder on the Red Devils’ teamsheet.

However, pushing Casemiro higher up the pitch may not be the best idea as the Brazilian simply does not have the stamina to be able to carry out Erik ten Hag’s high-pressure approach.

Where Casemiro does excel, which not many United players do succeed at, is through his ability from dead ball situations with the Brazilians possessing the aerial prowess to score from corners and free-kicks, which again not many other Red Devils players can do.

The future is looking bleak for Casemiro and many expect this to be his final season at Old Trafford. It certainly seems a risk to play the Brazilian further forward in Ten Hag’s system, but if Ugarte is as good as United hope he might be, there is a chance it could work.
