Roy Keane backs Manchester United to finish in the top four

Roy Keane has told Sky Sports he is certain Manchester United will finish in the top four this season.

United end this weekend in fourth place, although could drop to sixth if Tottenham and Arsenal win their games in hand.

By the same token, United can close the gap on third placed Chelsea to just three points by winning our games in hand, so it is very tight at the moment, with plenty of football left to be played.

United still have to play Liverpool, City, Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal, with these games all taking place between March and May.

Former Red Devils captain Roy Keane was unequivocal in his response over whether United will secure a Champions League spot.

Keane said: “Without a doubt,” when asked if United would finish in the top four, before adding, “Strength in depth,” as reason for his confidence in the side.

Co-pundits Jamie Redknapp and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink agreed with Keane’s assessment, before the former midfielder added: “At least fourth.”

United can do it

The back to back wins over Brentford and top four rivals West Ham has seen confidence begun to flow among United supporters once again.

The team is in a good moment, with Ralf Rangnick settling on a formation and seemingly like he is close to knowing his best starting XI, or very close to it.

Chelsea’s own drop in form has seen them slide out of the battle for the title, to looking over their shoulders for a top four spot.

This means instead of just one spot being up for grabs for United, there are potentially two, and Keane is right that United should really be targeting third place.

A lot has to go right between now and the end of the season, but as Keane points out, United have the squad depth, and the players will be highly motivated to secure Champions League football for next season.

United now have a two week break, with the next match the FA Cup fourth round tie at home to Middlesbrough.

The next league game is an away game against relegation battlers Burnley, who United beat 3-1 at Old Trafford in December.
