Ronaldo, Figo, Nani - What they say about United target Bruno Fernandes

United fans wait for progress on a move for Bruno Fernandes. The Times reported last night more talks will take place with United and Sporting in an attempt to get a deal done.

Fernandes would be an astute signing for United, a player worthy of wearing the club’s number seven shirt.

He is a player who has received high praise from big names, including iconic former United number seven Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo said last summer he was bemused Fernandes was not signed by a top European club.

He told Goal: “In the national team you have [Joao] Cancelo, Bruno Fernandes, who nobody knows why he doesn’t leave. In the national team, you have a lot of talent.”

Fernandes has been loyal to Sporting, staying with the club when he could have forced a move amid their financial trouble, like Rui Patricio’s cut-price move to Wolves.

He was praised by Portuguese legend Luis Figo last year, who said he regarded him as one of the country’s best players.

Speaking last August, Figo told RR: “I think Bruno Fernandes is one of the highest values at the national level. If he stays, it is good for Sporting. If he stays, it is a great plus.”

The best advice to Fernandes came from former United winger Nani, who backed him to be a success in England.

Nani told A Bola regarding Fernandes: “I often said to him, ‘you with the strength you have, if you train a little more you will explode and drive the English crazy’. England is where he will shine.”

Rival Benfica manager described Fernandes as ‘extraordinary’, Record reported, while former United boss Jose Mourinho is an admirer.

Mourinho was quoted by the MEN, last year citing Eleven Sports: “I was surprised by the season of Bruno Fernandes. It was easy to predict quality, he is a very good player, but scored a very high number of goals for a midfield player.

“It shows that you need to have instinct and qualities to score and he has it all. He strikes the ball well, heads well, cool when he is one-on-one with the goalkeeper. He finds space in the penalty area. It’s all there.”

It is clear Fernandes is a player who commands respects among his country’s most esteemed footballing figures.

Ronaldo’s comments highlight that there is an expectation for Fernandes to test himself by taking a next step in his career.

Hopefully that next move is to Old Trafford, and the United board don’t waste any time getting a deal done.
