Rio Ferdinand can’t believe Bruno Fernandes comments after Man United lose to Tottenham, tells him to ‘retract that statement’

Bruno Fernandes had a game to forget as Manchester United were thumped 3-0 by Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils were looking to bounce back against Spurs after successive draws to Crystal Palace and Twente, but instead Erik ten Hag‘s side are now three games without a win.

It was a miserable performance from United, who conceded to Brennan Johnson after just three minutes.

United continued to make sloppy mistakes even after the early goal, and things went from bad to worse when Bruno Fernandes saw red for a reckless challenge on James Maddison just before the break.

Fernandes’ red card split opinion, but ultimately it capped off a poor few weeks for United’s captain, who had been struggling this season even before the Spurs game.

Fernandes, who is now set to miss three games for United, came out to speak to the media after the loss and his comments did not go down well with club legend Rio Ferdinand.

The loss against Tottenham was nothing short of pathetic. There was a clear lack of effort and frankly Andre Onana prevented a catastrophe with a superb number of saves.

United fans are already sick of hearing players cough up apologies after heavy defeats, but even worse is hearing the captain try to defend a poor performance.

Speaking on Rio Ferdinand Presents, Ferdinand said: “I’ve just seen Bruno came out and spoke and one of the quotes that came from there was that he said James Maddison said it was not a foul and not a red card.

“Which is fine, but it’s a red card. And I think Bruno said ‘there’s many good things we can take away from today, I’m really proud of the team’.

“He’s going to have to watch that game back and then retract that statement. Because that isn’t right, he hasn’t seen it the way we’ve seen it on TV.”

Ferdinand is right. There is almost nothing to be proud about that performance. United started slowly and got worse.

There was no identity or team spirit and there was an unforgivable number of mistakes – regardless of the red card.

Erik ten Hag now under huge pressure

It is now two wins from six Premier League matches for United, which is simply unacceptable.

The Spurs defeat will ultimately fall on Ten Hag, and the Dutchman is running out of time to prove that he is making progress with this side.

There are no more excuses – Ten Hag is into his third season, has a squad full of players that he wanted, and has a proper footballing structure behind him thanks to Ineos.

There had been signs of promise earlier this season, but United reverted back to the unorganised, chaotic style we saw last season.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s stance on sacking Erik ten Hag has not changed, but there has to be a huge turnaround in both performances and results in the upcoming fixtures, starting with Porto on Thursday.
