Only one Man United player can hold their head high after Tottenham defeat, he prevented catastrophe

There was only one positive to take from Manchester United’s disappointing 3-0 defeat to Tottenham.

Manchester United’s poor start to the season has continued. Tottenham’s thumping at Old Trafford makes it just two wins from six games in the Premier League.

The Red Devils have now slumped down to 11th in the Premier League table and they are already six points off the top four.

It was a shameful display from United from the very first minute and things went from bad to worse when Bruno Fernandes was sent off for a challenge on James Maddison.

Brennan Johnson, Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke all etched their name onto the scoresheet and frankly United were lucky that they were only three goals down by the full-time whistle.

A disastrous performance vs Tottenham

United looked completely sapped of energy and confidence from the very first kick of the game.

Almost every player on the pitch was struggling to do the basics right. In every passage of play there were misplaced passes, sloppy touches and poor body language.

It immediately had shades of that 7-0 defeat to Liverpool – perhaps the worst United performance in recent history.

After conceding early on, heads dropped and the performance levels only got worse.

It is hard to blame anyone but the players after seeing such simple mistakes made repeatedly, but ultimately the responsibility will fall to Ten Hag, who is now under huge pressure.

The Dutchman has a terrible record against the ‘Big Six’ and 3-0 losses to Liverpool and Spurs this season have only added to that.

Andre Onana prevented disaster vs Tottenham

The only United player who can leave Old Trafford with their head held high is Andre Onana – who is solely responsible for the scoreline not becoming incredibly embarrassing.

He made a staggering seven saves against Tottenham, including three huge stops when the visitors were through one-on-one.

Had it not been for Onana, Spurs easily could have led by five or six.

Onana was also behind one of United’s best – and only – chances in the match after his precise long ball found Marcus Rashford early on.

He ended the match with 45 touches, 15 accurate passes and six long balls while making seven saves – five of which came from shots taken inside the box.

Onana was criticised following the draw to Twente, but his shot-stopping against Spurs prevented a disaster and his teammates and Ten Hag have a lot to thank him for.
