Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes was sent off against Tottenham Hotspur, with a decision which has split opinion.

Bruno Fernandes was sent off against Tottenham Hotspur after a poor challenge on James Maddison.

Fernandes was insistent that he slipped, leading to his high challenge on the Tottenham midfielder, who made the most of it.

United were 1-0 down at the time and went on to lose 3-0 at Old Trafford, making it just seven points from six matches.

Bruno Fernandes red reaction

Bruno Fernandes‘ sending off split opinion on MUTV, with the case put forward why VAR should have intervened.

Danny Simpson felt that Fernandes’ red card should have been overturned and downgraded to a yellow card.

Simpson said: “The red card, for me, the game’s gone. Listen, he slips, yes, he catches him a little bit high, but we’ve got VAR to come in and say, actually, it’s not that bad. No, you can make that yellow card.”

“Regarding the referee, he commented: “Obviously, in a split second, he’s decided the foot is high, therefore he thinks it’s endangering James Madison’s safety. So in his eyes, it’s a red card.

“Then, of course, the threshold is so high that VAR then were never really going to overturn that, even though we can see with the slowest replay that Bruno slips some way.”

He then added: “There’s no excuse to have the foot that high, but maybe that’s why it’s there.”

Former United defender David May disagreed and felt there was no reason for Fernandes to lunge in on Maddison around the halfway line.

May told MUTV: “First and foremost why is he trying to make that challenge?

“For me, it’s reckless. And yes, you can say, well, he slipped, and, you know, a dangled leg… he knows he’ll have let the team down there with that challenge.”

Fernandes now faces a three-match suspension and will not play a single Premier League game in October.

Rio Ferdinand on Fernandes red

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand had a blunt verdict on Bruno Fernandes being sent off, he disagreed with the decision.

He posted on X: “Never a red,” making his feelings perfectly clear.

Fernandes expressed his disappointment in a post-match interview, contending his view that the incident was not worthy of a red card.

The Manchester United captain did not dispute he fouled his Tottenham opponent – but insisted he only deserved a yellow card for the challenge, and not a red.
