Rio Ferdinand and Owen Hargreaves were both on the same wavelength over a potential mistake that Ruben Amorim had already made at Manchester United.

Ruben Amorim officially arrived at Old Trafford on Monday after leaving Sporting CP and becoming the new Manchester United manager.

United agreed a deal with Sporting CP earlier this month to sign the 39-year-old Portuguese manager, who will succeed Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

Amorim had inked a deal with United until June 2027 and the former Sporting CP manager has now taken up his duties at the Premier League club.

The new United manager’s arrival at the Red Devils during the November international break also marked the end of Ruud van Nistelrooy’s interim spell.

Hargreaves on Man Utd legend and Amorim

Ruud van Nistelrooy was installed as Manchester United interim manager after fellow Dutchman Erik ten Hag was sacked by the Premier League club.

The 48-year-old United legend oversaw a four-match run at Old Trafford as interim boss, with Van Nistelrooy picking up three wins and one draw under his reign.

Van Nistelrooy, who returned to Old Trafford in the summer as part of Ten Hag’s coaching staff, officially left the Red Devils on Monday after Ruben Amorim’s arrival.

The former United assistant manager’s future at the club was shrouded in mystery amid Amorim’s desire to bring his own coaching staff to Old Trafford.

United on Monday announced that Van Nistelrooy and fellow coaches Rene Hake, Jelle ten Rouwelaar and Pieter Morel had all left the Premier League club.

Speaking on Rio Ferdinand Presents, Owen Hargreaves believes that Van Nistelrooy’s continued presence at Old Trafford would have been invaluable for the players.

“They need to learn from one of the best to ever do it,” he said.

“You don’t have to be the main guy, the coach, but he can help these guys learn the little details.”

Ferdinand talks Van Nistelrooy and Amorim

Rio Ferdinand saw eye to eye with former United teammate Hargreaves about the role that Van Nistelrooy could have played amid Amorim’s reign.

The 46-year-old United legend, who played alongside Van Nistelrooy at Old Trafford, claimed that Red Devils boss Amorim faced a “hard decision” over the Dutchman.

“We’ve been sitting here waiting for a manager to connect with the players,” Ferdinand said.

“We have one right now. Why are you going to get rid of him? The biggest sticking point and question mark will be the manager. It’ll be his decision to decide whether he keeps Ruud or not.

“It’s a hard decision because you’re going to need a massive personality and character and confidence in what you do to say, ‘I don’t care who’s next to me, I can do this.’ You’ve got to work out if he’s going to be added value or a distraction.”
