Gary Lineker has insisted that Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim could be in an “awkward” position if he doesn’t commit to one key decision at Old Trafford.
Ruben Amorim officially became the Manchester United manager on Monday after the start of the November international break.
The Red Devils paid a £9.25m fee to trigger the release clause in the contract of former Sporting CP manager Amorim earlier this month.
Amorim, who has been praised for his work at Sporting CP, has inked a contract until June 2027 to succeed Erik ten Hag in the Old Trafford dugout.
Erik ten Hag was axed by the Red Devils late last month after United’s disappointing start to the 2024-25 Premier League campaign.
Ruud van Nistelrooy led United for a four-match interim managerial spell at Old Trafford and his last match in charge was the 3-0 win against Leicester City.
Amorim signed off his Sporting CP spell on Sunday after a 4-2 Primeira Liga win over Portuguese side Braga at the Braga Municipal Stadium.

Lineker talks Amorim and Man Utd
Ruud van Nistelrooy’s long-term future at Old Trafford remains uncertain after Sunday’s 3-0 win over Leicester City ahead of the November break.
The 48-year-old Dutchman returned to the Premier League club in the summer and became a key member of Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff at United.
Ruben Amorim has revealed that he will hold talks with Van Nistelrooy, who was assistant manager under Ten Hag, amid his arrival at the Red Devils.
Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker is now convinced that Amorim will not keep United legend Van Nistelrooy as part of his coaching staff.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football, Lineker said: “It also wouldn’t surprise me if Ruben Amorim comes in and goes, ‘Do you really want someone who’s been part of the previous regime in there?’
“Especially a big personality like that, and where do you place him, is he first assistant?
“I think it might be a little bit awkward and I suspect like you Alan, he might go elsewhere.”
Van Nistelrooy on steering Man Utd ship
Van Nistelrooy signed off his United interim managerial spell with three wins and a draw, with the Red Devils 13th place in the Premier League table.
Speaking after the Leicester City match, the United legend insisted that it was important to steer the ship at the Red Devils after the sacking of Ten Hag.
“What we try to do is obviously try to stabilise, after a very difficult, emotional period,” he said, as per Manchester United’s official website.
“You want to get the players performing at their best, so a lot of communication and training sessions, to get the right feeling across to them.
“It’s about believing in themselves and, look, the only way is up. It’s where we want to go, as a club and as a team, to get results going and build on it.”
