Amidst the euphoria of Manchester United’s 7-0 win last night in the Carabao Cup, it was lost that another Manchester United player had a landmark moment.

Rhys Bennett, the Manchester United centre-back who is spending this season on loan at Fleetwood Town, scored his first senior professional goal.

Fleetwood Town were also in the Carabao Cup, hoping for a giant-killing against Championship outfit Stoke City.

With The Potters leading leading courtesy of Michael Rose’s 54th-minute goal, Bennett’s side were looking at an early exit.

But the United loanee had other ideas, as he scored his first professional goal in sensational circumstances.

Rhys Bennett’s landmark moment

It was the first minute of injury time in the second half. Fleetwood Town remained trailing by a goal and Bennett, who had started on the bench but came on for the last 20 minutes was waiting in the box.

His team had just won a corner and when it was floated in, Bennett struck a bullet header past the goalkeeper to send Fleetwood Town supporters into delirium.

They had equalised against a team two divisions above them in startling circumstances, ensuring that Bennett would never forget that moment.

Unfortunately, the game would remain deadlocked in extra time and Fleetwood lost on penalties but Bennett should use this momentum to kickstart his loan spell.

Scott McTominay responds to Bennett’s message

It is an open secret that Scott McTominay will remain a Red Devil in his heart forever, closely following the club after his exit.

It was more apparent than ever after he responded to Bennett’s message on Instagram after he scored his first professional goal.

Bennett wrote: “Tough one to take in the end, but on a personal note happy to score my first professional goal.”

The post received replies from many current and former teammates. Maxi Oyedele, who joined Polish side Legia Warsaw this summer, replied with an open-mouthed emoji and a burst of air.

McTominay replied with an eye-heart emoji and one that signified Bennett’s way to the top. Sam Murray, Ethan Ennis, Sam Mather, and Charlie McNeill also responded.

Fellow loanee Joe Hugill, who is having a resurgence of his own at Wigan, replied with “Lochness”, perhaps a nickname for Bennett’s size and dominance.

Bennett will be next seen in action on September 23 when Fleetwood Town host Morecambe in a league game.
