United staff reportedly told England Rashford would have been better off missing the Euros

A report by the Athletic claims that Manchester United staff felt Marcus Rashford would be better off resting this summer rather than going to Euro 2020.

They claim that Rashford is not fit enough to start matches for England, who will take on Ukraine in the quarter-finals on Saturday.

The winner of that game will set up a semi-final with either Denmark or Czech Republic on Wednesday night.

Rashford’s desperation to be part of England’s campaign is the reason he’s involved at all.

He has only been used as an impact sub so far, coming on in all three group stage matches.

Rashford remained on the bench against Germany on Tuesday and it would be a surprise to see him start any games this summer in light of this information.

Perhaps some Manchester United fans will be annoyed that Rashford has linked up with his country in this circumstances.

Mason Greenwood pulled out of England’s 33-man preliminary squad to allow himself to recover from an injury and some supporters would no doubt have liked Rashford to have done the same.

Should Rashford have gone to the Euros?

But the opportunity to play in a major tournament for your country should never be taken for granted.

It’s a huge privilege and one Rashford has already had three times in his career.

And United had Rashford playing through the pain all season, starting him almost every game despite his injury struggles.

Given Ole Gunnar Solskjaer didn’t really manage Rashford in the most careful manner, he can’t complain too much now that the forward is part of England’s plans despite not being fully fit.

Rashford may well undergo surgery on a shoulder issue after the tournament and it’s to be hoped that somehow, he is more injury free next season despite the less than ideal scenario of him going away with England while injured.
