Rene Meulensteen has given a positive account of Michael Carrick after seeing him restore calm at Manchester United following the team losing control of results under Ruben Amorim.
The 2026/27 season promises to be a big one for Michael Carrick, after he recently signed a two-year deal as Manchester United’s head coach.
Carrick’s first five months in charge coincided with a third-place finish in the Premier League, as he helped guide the Reds back into the Champions League.
Former United assistant manager Rene Meulensteen, who worked with Carrick during his playing career, likes what he’s seen from the head coach.

Man Utd’s Premier League fixtures for 2026/27 have now been CONFIRMED – What do you think?
Rene Meulensteen’s verdict on Michael Carrick as Man Utd head coach
Now that the Premier League fixtures have been announced, excitement is building for the 2026/27 season.
Carrick will be aiming high – to compete for the Premier League title, after watching Mikel Arteta win it for the first time as Arsenal head coach.
That becomes the ultimate objective for Carrick, as it should for any United head coach.
Meulensteen is looking forward to United’s start to the season after Carrick’s impressed him with his calming influence at Old Trafford.
“Carrick’s brought back a calmness around the team, and that has also to do with the way he carries himself,” Meulensteen told Tipman Tips.
“He’s a calm guy, he’s collected, and when he speaks, you know that he’s got good context on what he’s talking about from his history with the club.
“Obviously, they will have had discussions behind closed doors about how the hierarchy would like to see United being operated, and I’m sure that Michael has got a say in terms of the type of players that he wants to bring in.
“Who’s going to make those decisions is a big question for his future, but in my opinion, it always has to be a cooperation between the head coach and the recruitment department.”
Meulensteen also stressed that Rashford could star for United again if he returns to the team after the 2026 World Cup.

The Manchester United head coach has so much work to do…
Rene Meulensteen makes prediction about football landscape in Manchester amid Pep Guardiola exit
Although Man City have yet to announce Pep Guardiola’s successor, it is widely accepted that the next head coach will be former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca.
Meulensteen believes that with the departure of Guardiola the landscape in Manchester will change.
Iraq’s assistant manager said: “With Pep gone, that means that the landscape of Manchester is going to change quite quickly. I do however think the consistency plan from City in that respect has been good, because Maresca is a guy that knows City, he’s been there before, they know him, he knows what Pep has done.
“I’m sure that he would want to put his own slant on things, but he did great at Leicester, he also did very well at Chelsea, winning two trophies including the Club World Cup and everything, so yeah, that will be interesting to see. But when a big manager leaves your club, it will always have some consequences, because there will also be some big players leaving.”
