Ralf Rangnick will be able to take charge of his first Manchester United match as interim manager in Sunday’s clash against Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.
With the club and Rangnick finalising visa and work permit details, Michael Carrick will take charge of Thursday night’s game against Arsenal, with Rangnick watching his new club from the stands.
The 63-year-old may not have managed in England before, but he has pitted his wits against some of the league’s best managers.
Here we take a look at the German’s record against current Premier League managers…
Rangnick squared off against the Leicester City manger, during the Northern Ireland man’s time as Celtic manger, in the 2018/19 Europa League.
RB Leipzig won the first group stage between the two sides 2-0 at the Red Bull Arena. In Rangnick’s starting line-up that day was Dayot Upamecano and Marcel Sabitzer.
However, in the second group stage game at Celtic Park, Rodgers’ side came out on top 2-1, thanks to goals from Kieran Tierney and Odsonne Edouard, who is now a Crystal Palace player, and could face Rangnick on Sunday.
Rangnick faced off against his former disciple on five occasions in the Bundesliga.
But the current Chelsea manager got the better of his mentor in four of those clashes.
During his time as manager of Mainz, Tuchel squared off against the man dubbed the ‘godfather’ of gegenpressing, when he was in charge of Hoffenheim and Schalke.
However, in the most recent clash between the two managers, Rangnick’s Schalke side came from 2-0 down to win 4-2, with Liverpool’s Joel Matip getting on the scoresheet.
Rangnick has faced Klopp on 13 occasions, he has only managed more matches against Felix Magath (16) and Thomas Schaaf (18), according to Transfermarkt.
In 13 matches against Klopp, Rangnick has only lost twice. United fans will be hoping he can improve on that record when we go to Anfield next year, looking to avenge the chastening 5-0 horror show we experienced, under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
During his time managing Hoffenheim, Rangnick inflicted a 4-1 defeat on Klopp’s Borussia Dortmund side.
The only clash between the two German managers when Rangnick was manager of Schalke came in the DFL-Supercup, at the Veltins-Arena, in 2011.
Rangnick’s side came out on top in the Gelsenkirchen derby on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes.
Kevin Großkreutz and Ivan Perisic missed the penalties, which meant Rangnick lifted the German Cup at Klopp’s expense.
In 13 matches against Klopp, Rangnick has won six and drew five, alongside the aforementioned two losses.
