Manchester United’s 2024 summer transfer window has officially ended – and it’s one that former Red Devils boss Ralf Rangnick would’ve been extremely fond of.
Erik ten Hag made six signings this window, with some definitely better than others – but all in all, it can be classed as a success. The likes of Leny Yoro, Manuel Ugarte and Matthijs de Ligt could all be inspired purchases.
But such as some good incomings happened at Old Trafford over the last few months – there were also many, many outgoings for the Red Devils.
A whopping eight players were sold permanently, with many more released, alongside seven United stars also out on loan. Ralf Rangnick finally got his Manchester United wish.

Ralf Rangnick finally got his Manchester United wish
Back in April 2022, Rangnick took over as interim boss of Manchester United, following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Rangnick appeared to arrive with a no-nonsense attitude and immediately highlighted some of the major issues around Carrington in his first major press conference.
For context, the Red Devils sat in sixth, three points behind fourth-placed Tottenham and fifth-placed Arsenal. However, the German was clear that change must occur for United to be genuine title contenders again.
He began: “You don’t even need glasses to see and analyse where the problems are. Now it’s about how do we solve them? It’s not enough to do some minor amendments – cosmetic things.
“In medicine you would say that this is an operation of the open heart. If this happens and everyone has realised that this has to happen and if people want to work together then it makes sense and I believe it doesn’t take two or three years to change those things. This can happen within one year.”
Well, it didn’t take one year – but just over two and a half. Manchester United’s summer clearout under the helm of Sir Jim Ratcliffe is definitely more of what the German was on about.
Now, if his prediction is correct – Manchester United can now rise back to the top.
Manchester United’s 24/25 ‘open heart surgery’
A whopping seventeen outgoings occurred this past window. This includes:
- Jadon Sancho
- Scott McTominay
- Mason Greenwood
- Alvaro Fernandez
- Aaron Wan-Bissaka
- Facundo Pellistri
- Donny van de Beek
- Willy Kambwala
- Hannibal Mejbri
- Raphael Varane
- Shola Shoretire
- Brandon Williams
- Omari Forson
- Charlie McNeil
- Maxi Oyedele
- Will Fish
That is what you call ‘open heart surgery’. Ineos have taken no prisoners when it comes to shifting deadwood – which is a seriously refreshing concept around Carrington.
We’ve also seen the Manchester United squad improve with fantastic, young talent – now it’s just up to Ten Hag to fit the puzzle pieces together, and United could be back in the big time once again.
