Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville has ruled out that Darren Fletcher will adopt the same approach that Ruben Amorim took during the latter’s reign as Manchester United manager.

Darren Fletcher was appointed Manchester United Under-18s head coach last summer and has been a key figure behind the scenes with the youth academy.

The 41-year-old former United technical director has not been elevated to the role of caretaker manager after Ruben Amorim’s sudden dismissal from Old Trafford.

Fletcher will take charge of United in the short term and will lead the Red Devils to their Premier League clash at Turf Moor against Burnley on Wednesday evening.

The ex-United and Scotland midfielder is expected to speak with the media for the first time on Tuesday evening as United’s newly appointed caretaker manager.

Gary Neville admits Man Utd manager Ruben Amorim did something that he liked at Old Trafford

Ruben Amorim’s reign as Manchester United manager is over after the Premier League club axed the 40-year-old Portuguese coach on Monday morning.

The former United manager took charge of his last Premier League match at the weekend, with the Red Devils picking up a 1-1 away draw against Leeds United.

However, Amorim’s post-match scathing comments against the United hierarchy played a part in the ex-Sporting CP manager’s departure from Old Trafford.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Gary Neville admitted that he was shocked at how much he liked the three-man backline United played with under Amorim’s tactical system.

“I’m surprised the back three didn’t work, I was actually quite excited by seeing it come into play, because I didn’t think we had a great back four, but having watched us play a back four the other week they were really good when they played, it was [Patrick] Dorgu who played on the right wing, and it was [Diogo] Dalot and [Luke] Shaw left-back and right-back,” he said.

Amorim’s tactics over the course of his 14 months at the Red Devils deeply divided United fans over the Premier League club’s lack of consistency on the pitch.

The former United manager found major success with his tactical approach with Sporting CP before he left his native homeland and arrived at Old Trafford in 2024.

United legend Neville is convinced that former club teammate Darren Fletcher will make the call to revert back to a four-man backline instead of a three-man defence.

“I just felt it looked like it belonged again, and I think that’s ultimately now they need to go back to that,” he added.

“They pretty much will, I think, I can’t believe [interim boss] Darren Fletcher is going to go with a back three at Burnley on Wednesday night.

“He’s going to go with a back four with probably two midfield players, a number 10, a striker and two wide players.”

United and Burnley’s Premier League clash at Turf Moor is slated for an 8:15pm kick-off time in the UK on Wednesday.
