Manchester United have begun the Ruben Amorim era as Ruud van Nistelrooy potentially eyes a return to Premier League management.

More than three weeks since his appointment as Manchester United boss, Ruben Amorim made his bow on Sunday.

Amorim started with a 1-1 draw at Ipswich Town as United flattered to deceive once again.

Andre Onana impressed United fans and Amorim has praised Noussair Mazraoui, but there weren’t many other positives to take from this draw.

Amorim has a big job on his hands but United fans will certainly back him and give him time to turn the club around.

The 39-year-old has already made some significant changes, from his switch to a 3-4-3 formation to his shaking up of the coaching team.

Ruud van Nistelrooy approach made

Amorim has brought his own staff from Sporting with him and that meant letting some United coaches leave the club.

Rene Hake and Jelle ten Rouwelaar were among those to leave, but the big departure was that of Ruud van Nistelrooy.

The Dutchman rejoined United as a coach over the summer and was thrust into becoming interim boss after United sacked Erik ten Hag.

Van Nistelrooy shared an emotional goodbye to United as Amorim arrived, with the pair going their separate ways.

Coventry City have been linked with Van Nistelrooy but it’s their rivals Leicester City who are now showing the strongest interest.

Reporter Rudy Galetti now claims that Leicester have made an approach for Van Nistelrooy after the sacking of Steve Cooper on Sunday.

Galetti reported on Sunday that former United boss David Moyes is also in contention as the Foxes seek a new boss in their battle against the drop.

Galetti adds that Leicester are now waiting for a response from Van Nistelrooy having seemingly made him their top target for the job.

Van Nistelrooy has become Leicester’s ‘priority’ according to Galetti, with the former United man potentially in line for a swift return to Premier League management.

Van Nistelrooy surely impressed during Manchester United stint

Perhaps Leicester’s interest in Van Nistelrooy shouldn’t be a huge surprise.

Two of Van Nistelrooy’s four games as interim boss of United came against Leicester – one in the EFL Cup and one in the Premier League.

Van Nistelrooy’s first game against the Foxes was a 5-2 thumping in the EFL Cup with Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes bagging a brace each.

As Van Nistelrooy’s reign started with a win over Leicester, it ended in the exact same way.

United beat Leicester 3-0 at Old Trafford as Van Nistelrooy said goodbye, handing him an 8-2 aggregate over Leicester in just two games.

The Leicester hierarchy may well have been impressed with Van Nistelrooy’s work at United as well as his prior spell with PSV Eindhoven.

A deal doesn’t seem imminent but if Van Nistelrooy does take the Leicester job, he will be in line to face United at the King Power Stadium on March 15, 2025.
