Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has had his say on the managerial set to commence at Old Trafford under Ineos’ rule.

Since Ruben Amorim’s disastrous 14 months came to a decisive end, there have been a variety of links to potential managerial appointments, both for the caretaker and permanent positions.

Right now, Manchester United are weighing up three caretaker options: Michael Carrick, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and Ruud van Nistelrooy. While the race to succeed Amorim next summer has a lot more names in contention.

Carlo Ancelotti could emerge as a contender after his World Cup with Brazil is over, while Paul Scholes is tipping Thomas Tuchel to take charge, which would again be after the international competition in North America; these are just two of dozens.

Whoever is chosen by Ineos to lead the club into the 2026/27 Premier League season, Peter Schmeichel has one demand from the appointment.

Peter Schmeichel sends message to Ineos amid managerial uncertainty

When a club legend like Schmeichel speaks, it is always worth listening, and hopefully, Ineos will be taking notes after the Danish goalkeeper commented on one thing that needs to be done before selecting the next manager.

Speaking on the TV channel Via Play during coverage of Arsenal vs Liverpool, Schmeichel sent a message to Ineos over what they need to do during the manager search.

“What I really, really want them [the hierarchy] to do now is to take a long, long, deep breath. Start to think about what Manchester United is supposed to be.

“So give the whole plan an identity. This is who we want to be. This is what we want to look like, this is the play we want to play.

“And then when you get that, so you’ve done that bit of work, then you go out, and then you look at the market and think, okay, what person out there can deliver that for us?”

Ineos have five months to make Manchester United great again

The advice from Schmeichel is something that Ineos should have done last season, instead of leaping into the appointment of Amorim despite his system not suiting the squad.

So with Ineos opting for a caretaker manager, it is clear they learned from the mistakes of last season.

Ineos have given themselves five months or so to conduct a thorough process to find the manager who will dictate United’s identity for the coming years.

There should be diligent analysis of the potential manager’s systems, personalities, youth commitments, and footballing philosophy.

Ineos needs to get this appointment right; otherwise, it might not be the coaches on the chopping block next time around.
