Peter Schmeichel rates three of Man Utd’s major signings after Man City defeat, two have done ‘same thing’ in his eyes

Peter Schmeichel has mixed feelings on three key Manchester United signings after Manchester City’s comfortable 3-0 win in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

Manchester City hosted Manchester United at the Etihad for their first match post-September international break, as well as the first Manchester derby of the 2025-26 season.

Pep Guardiola would see his men walk away with the ultimate bragging rights on the weekend, with United struggling to climb back into the tie against City on Sunday.

City took the lead over United in the first half of the Premier League clash at the Etihad after Phil Foden’s bullet header landed in the corner of Altay Bayindir’s net.

Pep Guardiola’s men built on their momentum in the second half and City ensured they sealed all three Premier League points after a brace from Erling Haaland.

What Peter Schmeichel has spotted from Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo after Man Utd signed the duo in the summer

Matheus Cunha missed the Manchester derby on Sunday after the former Wolves star suffered an injury in Manchester United’s 3-2 win over Burnley last month.

Bryan Mbeumo, unlike Matheus Cunha, was eligible to play against Manchester City and the former Brentford ace was in the attack from the start of the match.

The 26-year-old Cameroon international played the full 90 minutes and Bryan Mbeumo was denied from scoring after a superb save from Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Speaking after City’s 3-0 win over United on Sunday, Peter Schmeichel admitted that Mbeumo and Cunha have shown why they were both valuable summer signings.

The 61-year-old United legend told Premier League Productions (via the Metro): “In terms of players being brought in, Cunha, for instance, I think in the three games he’s played – he came out very early in the game against Burnley – yes, I’ve seen things that can happen in the future, something we can build on.

“Bryan Mbeumo, the same thing, yes, it’s really good. That’s kind of progress in terms of how the team is going to be developed.

“At the moment, I don’t see it. The issue is, it was so clear all of last season, has not been addressed.”

Peter Schmeichel’s telling reaction to Benjamin Sesko after his praise for Man Utd duo Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo

Benjamin Sesko received his first Premier League start for United on Sunday, having made his previous three league appearances from the bench since his summer move.

United fans reacted to Benjamin Sesko’s performance in the Manchester derby and the 22-year-old Slovenian forward was starved of important service against City.

Unlike his praise for Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, Schmeichel argued that he was not convinced that United needed to sign Sesko in the summer in the first place.

“Yes, we didn’t score enough goals, so they bought players in who can score goals, but they spent the money on the third one – it’s nothing personal against Sesko – but we didn’t need the third striker, we needed a centre midfield player who can control that bit of the pitch, and we needed a goalkeeper,” he continued.

“Those were the issues we were struggling with last season and it’s not been addressed.”

Sesko has now made five appearances for United since his summer move in August and the Slovenia international has not found the back of the net once for his side.
