Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has dropped his clear-cut verdict on the Red Devils’ opening Premier League win of the season against Fulham at Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag’s men kicked off the first match of their 2024-25 Premier League campaign last week, with Manchester United clinching all three points.

Marco Silva’s Fulham side arrived at Old Trafford last Friday and frustrated United at times before the deadlock in the Premier League contest was broken.

Joshua Zirkzee climbed off the bench in the second half and the United summer signing fired Erik ten Hag’s side into the lead in the 87th minute at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag, who signed a new United contract extension this summer, is keen to see the Red Devils turn their Premier League form around this season.

The Red Devils endured a lacklustre 2023-24 Premier League season, with United managing only an eighth-place finish under manager Ten Hag.

Scholes on Man Utd vs Fulham

Erik ten Hag is now looking ahead to Manchester United’s first away match from home in the 2024-25 Premier League season.

The Red Devils travel to the Amex on Saturday for their Premier League clash against Brighton, with kick-off slated for 12:30pm UK time.

Ten Hag will be hopeful of building momentum on United’s start to the season and would expect a more convincing performance against Brighton after the Fulham win.

Speaking on The Overlap, Paul Scholes shared his two cents on United’s performance against Fulham and still remains unconvinced by the Red Devils.

The 49-year-old former United midfielder claimed that the Red Devils “did okay” in their Premier League opener, but he didn’t “see many differences” from last season.

“With Manchester United’s opening game against Fulham, I didn’t see many differences from their performances last season,” he said.

“I thought they did okay, and they deserved to win the game, but there were still plenty of times where there were loads of space in central midfield.”

Scholes identifies ‘problem’ with Man Utd

Scholes was critical of how the Red Devils would try to “attack” every opportunity that they had the ball, with the United legend far from convinced by the approach.

“The problem with United is that every time they have the ball, they are trying to attack, which isn’t a good thing,” he continued.

“You sometimes need five minutes on the ball to help take the sting out of the game, but constantly attacking, results in end-to-end football.

“If you look at Manchester City and their midfield, they take the sting out of the play and kill opposition teams that way, but with United, there is so much chaos with players running everywhere.”
