Patrick Dorgu could become Manchester United’s first signing under Ruben Amorim and he is a potential signing who ticks many boxes.
Man Utd have opened talks for Patrick Dorgu from Lecce and with that, there’s hope that the squad will finally have a natural left-back available.
Tyrell Malacia is free to leave and struggled to make that place his own after recovering from injury while Luke Shaw is effectively a bonus member when available.
Dorgu is an upgrade just by virtue of being a left-footed left-back who’s available and attack-minded but in terms of intangibles, he’s also already been through what United players have this season.
He shone.

Patrick Dorgu shares similarity with Man Utd players
Dorgu has played 22 games this season and more than 90% of available minutes across all competitions for Lecce, scoring thrice and providing one assist.
Clearly, in terms of availability, he couldn’t be more different from the two players whose place he could be about to take at left wing-back.
However, what happened to him on November 9, 2024 ,is exactly what happened to the Man Utd squad on October 28, 2024, just two weeks earlier.
The thing being talked about here, of course, is the managerial sacking. Luca Gotti was sacked by Lecce after less than nine months at the helm.
Just two weeks earlier, Erik ten Hag was sacked in this third season at Old Trafford, a decision that many would argue should have come even earlier.
However, while the United squad has somehow managed to be even worse under Ruben Amorim than they were under Ten Hag, Dorgu didn’t let that change affect him.
He continued to be a crucial part of the new manager’s plan, with Marco Giampaolo keeping him in the first XI and Dorgu kept shining.
Dorgu’s intangibles as important as his playing quality
This Manchester United squad needs an injection of elite mentality as much as it needs an injection of quality it is missing, of which there are many.
Still, this team has travelled to Arsenal, Man City, and Liverpool and got a positive result at all those places so the issue is as much about mentality as it is about quality.
In that sense, Dorgu’s ability to come through a setback and remain unaffected, one that was felt by United players too, albeit at a much larger scale, is an invaluable quality to add to this team.
Nobody is expecting a 20-year-old to reset the culture and standard at a club like United, but his addition can certainly be a positive step towards an eventual overhaul.
In Ruben Amorim’s position, you take any optimism you can possibly get from anywhere.
