While Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is in talks to rejoin Manchester United as an interim head coach, one of his former staff members is close to landing a senior job of his own.

Darren Fletcher’s time as Manchester United interim head coach could be short-lived if reports about Ole Gunnar Solskjaer are accurate.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Solskjaer has held positive talks about a return to Old Trafford four years after he was sacked as manager.

United fans chanted for Solskjaer in the latest draw with Burnley, and he could even be joined by former assistant Michael Carrick for a spell until the end of the season.

However, there is a chance that one of Solskjaer’s key backroom staff is about to take a senior management role of his own.

Eric Ramsay in talks for Championship manager job

Back in 2021, United hired Eric Ramsay as a set piece coach to assist Solskjaer.

United fans noticed Ramsay’s impact, and he quickly became a recognisable figure in Solskjaer’s staff. Ramsay stayed on as part of the staff under Ralf Rangnick and Erik ten Hag.

Fletcher has spoken highly of Ramsay behind the scenes, but he departed United at the start of 2024 to become the manager of Minnesota United in MLS.

Now, Sky Sports News are reporting that West Brom are in talks with Ramsay as a candidate to become their next manager.

Minnesota United finished fourth in the MLS Western Conference under Ramsay and made it to the quarter-finals of the play-offs.

Man United’s new coaching structure

When Amorim was sacked at the start of the week, his backroom staff that joined him from Sporting Lisbon were also dismissed.

It meant that Fletcher was left with very little support and he faced a quick turnaround to get the players ready to face Burnley.

Jonny Evans returned as assistant manager, while under-21s coach Travis Binnion and under-21s assistant Alan Wright were also in the dugout as part of Fletcher’s staff.

If Solskjaer’s return is confirmed, or Carrick steps in until the end of the season, there will no doubt be another reshuffle of the backroom staff.
