Not just Ederson, seven more Man Utd transfers that collapsed after they were ‘done’

Manchester United’s deal to sign Ederson now appears it will not go ahead despite an agreement.

Ederson to Manchester United looks unlikely to go ahead. After reaching an agreement with Atalanta in early June, there has been a change of plan.

Medical issues and a strategic switch have both been cited as reasons for the deal not going ahead, with the official reasoning currently unclear.

The Brazilian’s move to United is not the only Red Devils transfer to collapse at the final hurdle.

United In Focus has taken a look back at six other Manchester United deals that looked like they were done, but failed to materialise.

Celio Silva

Ederson is not the first Brazilian to see a transfer to Manchester United fall through. Back in 1997, the Red Devils struck a £4 million deal to sign Celio Silva from Corinthians.

Silva was set to become United’s first Brazilian player, before his move was blocked after he failed to earn a work permit.

Despite appearing at the Copa America that summer, Silva’s move to United was denied by red tape. Sir Alex Ferguson then moved to sign Henning Berg instead.

What is your REACTION to the claims that Manchester United’s deal for Ederson is now OFF…?

Ruud van Nistelrooy

Ruud van Nistelrooy was set to clinch a move to Manchester United in 2000, before he tore his ACL in a training session for PSV.

Sir Alex Ferguson was so determined to sign Van Nistelrooy that he waited a year and ensured that United struck a deal at the same price 12 months later.

Van Nistelrooy’s transfer was simply delayed rather than denied, and it proved to be an astute choice. The Dutchman went on to score 150 goals for the club.

Jon Obi Mikel

Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester United were left stunned when Chelsea hijacked a deal to sign Jon Obi Mikel back in 2005.

United had invited Mikel for trial and agreed a deal with Lyn Oslo, with the midfielder even giving interviews confirming the move wearing the shirt.

Roman Abramovich’s Chelsea then stole in and hijacked the transfer, which went through after a legal battle, with United receiving compensation.

Mikel was on the losing team for Chelsea against Manchester United in the Champions League Final in 2008.

Gareth Bale

Manchester United came close to striking a deal to sign Gareth Bale in January 2007, with The Guardian reporting that the club were ’90 per cent certain’ the deal would go through.

United were unable to close the deal with Southampton holding out for a higher fee from Tottenham.

Despite some growing pains and Tottenham’s attempts to sell him at one point, Bale went on to become one of the best footballers of his era, signing for Real Madrid in 2013.

Ed Woodward tried to sign Bale in 2013 too, making a failed high-profile attempt to sign him for £100 million.

Aaron Ramsey

Manchester United posted an official announcement on the club website after agreeing a fee with Cardiff City to sign Aaron Ramsey in 2008.

United had agreed to pay £4.5 million to Cardiff, but there was a problem, with Arsenal also having an offer accepted.

Arsene Wenger managed to convince 18-year-old Ramsey to join the Gunners instead.

David de Gea

An outgoing transfer that nearly was. Manchester United agreed a deal to sell David de Gea to Real Madrid on deadline day in 2015.

The deal fell through with United failing to send the paperwork over to Real Madrid in time, blaming a fax machine.

Everybody has a theory, but it’s hard to know whether this was simply incompetence from United or simply a case of getting cold feet.

Alvaro Morata

Manchester United were reported to have reached an agreement with Atletico Madrid to sign Alvaro Morata in June 2017, with the striker tipped to travel to undergo a medical.

United then changed course and chose to hijack Chelsea’s move to sign Romelu Lukaku from Everton instead.

Morata ended up signing for Chelsea, with both club and player suddenly looking for an alternative.
