Manchester United are in the process of completing their first signing of the summer after reaching an agreement with Atalanta for Brazilian midfielder Ederson.

The priority for Manchester United this summer is the midfield department. Casemiro’s departure and Manuel Ugarte’s potential exit mean the Red Devils are expected to sign two, if not three, new midfielders ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

United have been linked with several potential signings – from Elliot Anderson and Carlos Baleba to Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes.

One non-Premier League option is Ederson, currently playing for Atalanta in Serie A, with United understood to be making progress on their attempts to sign the Brazil international, who was overlooked by Carlo Ancelotti for the 2026 World Cup.

Ederson to cost Man Utd up to £38m as clubs reach agreement

United are preparing to announce Ederson as the first signing of the summer.

An agreement has been reached between United and Atalanta, which should see Ederson become the latest Brazilian to move his career to Old Trafford, according to David Ornstein of The Athletic.

The 26-year-old will sign for United in an initial £34.3m deal, with add-ons worth £3.8m. That means the transfer could cost the Red Devils £38m if Ederson reaches all of the objectives in his contract.

It is understood that personal terms are agreed until June 2030. The deal will include an extension option of an additional 12 months.

For the deal to go through, Ederson must complete a medical. All parties intend to announce the transfer as completed in early July.

This shows United are not waiting around to bolster their midfield options this summer. Ederson won’t be going to the World Cup, making the deal more straightforward to work on in the early stages of the summer transfer window.

United are expected to continue working on further midfield additions, but Ederson is set to become Michael Carrick’s first signing.

Ederson should get a full pre-season with Man Utd

Not every player moving to the Premier League hits the ground running, but Ederson will get the best chance to do that if United announce the deal – as reported – in early July.

That will allow Ederson to get a full pre-season under his belt before embarking on his debut season at Old Trafford.

Perhaps this is the biggest benefit of Ederson’s Brazil snub this summer. He can potentially get over it by joining the biggest club in the world.

United fans have just said goodbye to one popular Brazilian. The Old Trafford faithful may be about to welcome another.
