It is a week since Nicky Butt made his exit from Manchester United.
The club announced Butt’s departure from his role as head of first team development, before reports quickly emerged to paint a picture of discontent behind the scenes.
The Athletic claimed Butt quit for two reasons. The first was that he was overlooked for both the director of football and technical director role.

The second reason is alleged to be the club’s handling of the appointments, with the report claiming: “club officials failed to communicate the coming changes directly in advance,” to Butt.
The report added “Butt could not countenance Murtough effectively becoming his line manager.”
There has been much speculation regarding Butt’s next move. Preston and Derby have loosely been suggested as destinations, by the Lancashire Post, while The Athletic suggested he could head to Celtic as an assistant to Roy Keane.
Butt’s first move, has been to sign up to Instagram. He says he intends to use this time to think about what he will do next.
Butt received a message in reply from former United teammate David Beckham, who wrote: “Yes Butty finally on Instagram.. Welcome @nickybutt92 🙌”

Bright future
At the age of 46, Butt is still very young in management terms. He has gained plenty of experience in Manchester United’s academy, where he has previously led teams in the dugout for UEFA Youth League games.
Butt was also on the coaching staff for United’s first team last month against Newcastle, when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s usual assistants were ruled out due to Covid.
This really brings home how sudden his departure was, and as a result, John Murtough’s start as director of football is already off to a rocky start from a PR-perspective, with United losing Butt as a result of his promotion.
It will be interesting to see where Butt ends up, and for all we know, he may have an offer already.
