MUTV pundit hits out after one man had ‘absolute shocker’ in Man Utd loss vs Tottenham, ‘it’s despicable’

Manchester United were beaten 4-3 in the Carabao Cup away at Tottenham.

A woeful mix of goalkeeping and defending combined to see Manchester United lose 4-3 to Spurs and continue a miserable away record in London.

Altay Bayindir retained his spot in the Carabao Cup after featuring in previous rounds against Barnsley and Leicester City.

But this one was a night for the goalkeeper to forget. Bayindir conceded direct from a corner, although claimed he was impeded by Lucas Bergvall.

MUTV pundits criticise Tottenham’s fourth goal

Altay Bayindir was booked for arguing his case with the referee and his case was not helped by there being no VAR.

MUTV co-commentator David May hit out at referee John Brookes for allowing Son’s goal to stand.

May blasted: “The referee’s had an absolute shocker. how on earth he does not see that? Even the linesman should see it. It’s despicable.”

He admitted Manchester United did not help themselves, yet was still left feeling that the officials mishandled the situation.

“We actually put ourselves in that position with our defending for the second and third goal. Even the first goal is preventable following the shot at the edge of the box, you’ve got to follow things in.

“We got back in the game, and it was there to be taken. And again, the referee made a mistake, a big mistake for me being here. [Bayindir] certainly got his arm taken away.”

Another former United defender, Wes Brown, also told the channel he was unimpressed with the decision.

Brown added: “I do think if the VAR is there, the referee does give a foul. Obviously he still has to do better, he has to be stronger. I honestly do think the VAR pulls that one back.”

Mixed verdict

Let it not be said Manchester United’s in-house television studio does not offer mixed views. One pundit felt the goal was right to be permitted.

Former United academy man Ben Thornley said it was a hard case to argue. He said: “You can’t legislate for the goal going straight in from a corner. Altay Bayindir will be really disappointed.

“I didn’t really see much contact and I would have been disappointed if it had been given at the other end.”

United’s 4-3 defeat puts the team out of the Carabao Cup, missing out on a semi-final vs Liverpool.
