Manchester United fell to defeat against Tottenham in farcical circumstances.
Altay Bayindir rarely plays, and when he does – in an admittedly small 2024 sample size, he concedes worryingly embarrassing goals.
Back at Euro 2024 his one performance for Turkey was marred by a comical mix-up and own goal. An accident? Yes.
Now it’s two unfortunate incidents. He conceded four goals against Tottenham in the Carabao Cup – and the last one was particularly controversial.
He was seen angrily confronting referee John Brookes after the game, along with centre-back Lisandro Martinez.

Why Altay Bayindir was angry
Andre Onana had also come onto the pitch to speak to the officials too. But as shown above, he was calmer than Martinez and Bayindir who were angrily arguing their case.
Altay Bayindir had claimed his arm was pulled by Tottenham teenager Lucas Bergvall, which prevented him from jumping to cut out Heung Min Son’s corner. It sailed straight over his head, into the net.
Bayindir did appear to have been touched, and he had a case. Yet at the same time, he also got nowhere near the corner, and may not have reached it anyway.
He was booked on the pitch for arguing with the officials during the game. He was a little fortunate to escape further punishment afterwards.
Bayindir’s case was not helped by there being no VAR. The technology is not implemented in the competition, aside from the final.
Bayindir chances unlikely
This was the biggest game of Altay Bayindir’s Manchester United career. Previous opponents include Newport County, Barnsley, and Leicester.
This was a test he failed, and it’s questionable whether he gets another opportunity in such a big game.
United are far more likely to select Andre Onana against corner specialists Arsenal in the FA Cup. Bayindir would be targeted relentlessly, and does not look like he would be able to cope.
The Turkish international will have to hope for redemption in a late group stage Europa League game, once qualification is already secure.
