Wayne Rooney has explained what he expects to see from Manchester United in the 2026-27 campaign under newly appointed permanent head coach Michael Carrick.
Michael Carrick became the seventh permanent Manchester United manager in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era after his massive impact in the 2025-26 campaign.
The 44-year-old United legend took his place in the Old Trafford hot seat back in January as interim boss after Ruben Amorim was sacked as the club’s head coach.
Carrick inherited a United side that were seventh in the Premier League table and the former Middlesbrough manager led the Red Devils to a third-place finish.

What Wayne Rooney thinks Man Utd could pull off in the 2026-27 season under Michael Carrick’s Old Trafford reign
Michael Carrick now faces major pressure to deliver next season on the high standards that were seen at Manchester United during his interim head coach reign.
Wayne Rooney insisted that a key objective for the Red Devils will be to finish inside the Premier League top four in the 2026-27 campaign at Old Trafford.
Man Utd’s all-time leading scorer added that “progression” is important for Carrick’s reign, including mounting trophy challenges in the FA Cup or the Champions League.
“Well, I think the expectations, I spoke to him [Carrick] last week, will be to try and win everything they go in, but then you have to be realistic as well,” he said on talkSPORT, as per Goal.
“I think, can you progress again from where you’ve been? So, I think if United finish in the top four next season and maybe have a challenge and win, you know, maybe FA Cup and try and do well in the Champions League, I think, again, that’s progression.”

Wayne Rooney rules out Man Utd challenging for the Premier League title under Michael Carrick next season
United will see an increase in fixtures in the 2026-27 campaign after the Red Devils secured their return to the Champions League under Carrick’s reign.
Despite the third-place finish in the 2025-26 campaign, Rooney cannot see Man Utd mounting an effective Premier League title challenge next season.
“We all want them to win the league, but you have to be realistic and say, are they going to win the league? Are they going to win the Champions League?” he asked.
“I think it’s going to be very difficult, but [he is] trying to get an improvement.”
United ended their Premier League season at the Amex last Sunday, with Carrick’s Red Devils side securing a comfortable 3-0 win over Brighton.
