Ryan Giggs perfectly identified Ruben Amorim’s true shortcomings around midfielder Kobbie Mainoo after Michael Carrick executed his thesis at Manchester United.
Kobbie Mainoo’s 2025-26 Manchester United campaign at Old Trafford was night and day different during his playing time under Ruben Amorim and Michael Carrick.
The 21-year-old Stockport-born talent was out of the starting XI under former United manager Amorim and had been linked with a move away from the club.
Fast-forward to the arrival of United legend Carrick and Mainoo was back in the starting XI, called up for the England team again and inked a new contract with his club.

If Elliot Anderson is £125m… What is Kobbie Mainoo’s market value right now?
Not that he's going anywhere…🔒
Ryan Giggs noticed what Ruben Amorim was doing wrong with Man Utd and England midfielder Kobbie Mainoo all along
Casemiro was starting alongside Bruno Fernandes in the two-man midfield pivot under Ruben Amorim, who struggled to find a place for Kobbie Mainoo in his tactics.
Bruno Fernandes’ position change under Amorim relegated Mainoo to his role of watching from the United bench in the 2025-26 Premier League campaign.
Mainoo was reduced to cameo appearances under Amorim and the England international’s influence was diluted to its weakest form in the early part of the season.
Speaking to ManchesterWorld last December, Ryan Giggs offered his two cents on Mainoo’s run of form and why he was struggling so much from the bench.
The 52-year-old United legend said that it was not only about Mainoo playing regularly, but also the expectation that was being placed on the England star.
Giggs’ main argument was that United fans would see Mainoo climb off the bench and his immediate desire to try and impress in a half-hour-long cameo display.

Or are you signing two NEW starting midfielders?
The Michael Carrick effect unleashed Kobbie Mainoo’s free-flowing playing style for Man Utd from the first minute
Mainoo was in the starting XI for all but one of Michael Carrick’s 17 Premier League matches after Amorim was sacked as Man Utd head coach back in January.
The United youth academy product completed the full 90 minutes in 15 of the 16 Premier League fixtures that Carrick oversaw in the second half of the season.
Mainoo did not make his first Premier League start for United until the 2-0 win over Manchester City at Old Trafford in January, but it proved Giggs’ overall point.
It was not only about Mainoo starting every match, but more so on easing the expectation for him to come off the bench and to impress in a short space of time.
Mainoo has had time to settle into the midfield role from the minute that the whistle blows and to play his own free-flowing football without any restrictions on him.
The proof has been in the pudding with how Carrick has seen Mainoo complete a remarkable turnaround in form in such a short period at Man Utd.
