Michael Carrick has provided an update on Benjamin Sesko’s injury concerns before Manchester United take on Sunderland.

With Champions League football secured, Michael Carrick is still setting high demands for the team. He wants United to seal third spot in the Premier League.

After United’s 3-2 win over Liverpool, there are just three games left to play, but it remains to be seen how long Benjamin Sesko will be out.

Sesko was substituted at half-time in United’s win last Sunday, shortly after being pushed into the advertising boards at Old Trafford. Carrick said after the match that the striker had been nursing a shin issue before kick-off, which was presumably made worse by the knock he took courtesy of Ibrahima Konate.

Benjamin Sesko doubtful for Sunderland clash

Sesko was only able to play the first half of United’s encounter with Liverpool last weekend.

The Slovenia international was replaced by Amad Diallo at the break, but his fitness has remained a mystery for most of the week.

Until now, Carrick has been asked about Sesko’s fitness at his pre-Sunderland press conference.

“We’ll have to see,” Carrick told reporters.

“He’s obviously came off with a shin issue. So we’ll see. He hasn’t been fully back with the group. We will have to see how it goes.”

This potentially gives Joshua Zirkzee a chance to start against Sunderland on Saturday at 3pm.

The Netherlands forward has primarily featured as a substitute under Michael Carrick. His last start in the Premier League came under Ruben Amorim on December 30, 2025, in a 1-1 draw against Wolves.

Zirkzee scored United’s only goal in that match, but his future is up in the air as we approach the summer transfer window.

Benjamin Sesko will want to add to his tally

Sesko has scored 11 goals in 30 Premier League matches.

Hitting double figures in your first season in the Premier League as a 22-year-old is a decent feat.

However, Sesko will be keen to get back before the end of the season to increase his tally.

There’s room for improvement, and he will be aiming to kick on next season, with more experience under his belt.
