Matheus Cunha has underrated trait that means Man Utd signing outshines Mohamed Salah and Cole Palmer

Matheus Cunha will add extra firepower to Manchester United’s squad for the 2025/26 season.

Ruben Amorim has often cut a frustrated figure on the sidelines this season as he watches his Manchester United side dominate possession but struggle to finish their chances.

It has been a recurring problem, with Rasmus Hojlund in terrible form for much of the 2024/25 campaign.

With Marcus Rashford, Antony and Jadon Sancho all headed for the exit, it was important for Ineos to add extra creativity and goals to this side and Matheus Cunha’s arrival was confirmed on Sunday.

The Brazilian forward joined in a £62.5 million deal from Wolves, and a deep dive into his statistics shows he could prove to be a key addition.

Matheus Cunha is one of the Premier League’s most clinical finishers

In what has been a frustrating season, United have missed far too many chances, leaving Amorim ready to rip up the squad and rebuild over the summer.

In March, only three United players were outperforming their xG (expected goals), meaning the majority of the squad were not scoring as much as they should have been.

Amorim needs clinical finishers and that is exactly what Cunha has been at Wolves. As per The Athletic, Cunha boasts a 60% conversion rate of ‘big chances’ over the last two seasons.

That is a higher conversion rate than the Premier League’s top scorer, Mohamed Salah (48%), Alexander Isak (49%) and Cole Palmer (53%).

Cunha scored 17 goals last season across all competitions, with his 15 in the Premier League ranking him joint-eighth in the scoring charts.

Why Matheus Cunha is perfect for Ruben Amorim

Adapting to Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 style of play has been United’s biggest dilemma this season, but Cunha should be a natural fit.

Cunha played Amorim’s formation at Wolves which should give him a good foundation to build from in his debut season.

With Alejandro Garnacho told to leave this summer, Cunha is an ideal fit in a No.10 position to the left or right of a central striker.

Alternatively, Cunha’s impressive finishing stats prove he can also fill in up-front if needed.

Cunha has already starred at Old Trafford as a Wolves player, and now fans will hope to see similar performances from the Brazilian in a red shirt.
