Manchester United loanee Marcus Rashford has been warned that the “focus” on him at Aston Villa will be “immense” after he left Old Trafford in the transfer window.

That is according to Rangers legend Ally McCoist, who admitted that he is “looking forward to seeing what will happen” to Marcus Rashford at Aston Villa.

Rashford made his hotly anticipated Manchester United exit before the January transfer window shut, with the Red Devils player going on loan to Villa.

Villa have agreed to cover a large portion of the 27-year-old United star’s wages and the Premier League club did not have to pay a loan fee for the player.

United have also included an option for Villa to buy Rashford for a £40m transfer fee at the end of his loan spell at Villa Park.

Rashford had not featured for United since Ruben Amorim made the big call to drop him for the Manchester City match at the Etihad last December.

Ruben Amorim insisted that he wanted to see more from Rashford, whose form fell off a cliff at Old Trafford in the 2023-24 Premier League campaign.

Rashford was unable to climb back into the United XI after he was dropped and the United loanee admitted that his future could be away from Old Trafford.

McCoist on Rashford’s transfer to Villa

Marcus Rashford was linked with the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Barcelona and AC Milan ahead of his transfer to Aston Villa before the window shut.

The England international has only netted seven times in 24 appearances for the Red Devils in the 2024-25 season and struggled to rediscover his best form.

Rashford’s poor run of form last season cost the new Aston Villa player his place in the England squad, including missing out on Euro 2024 last summer.

Speaking to TribalFootball, Ally McCoist has admitted that Rashford will be working under “top manager” Unai Emery and the Villa boss could unlock his true potential.

“You would think they’re a team suited to his play,” he said.

“And just as importantly, he’s going to have a top manager who will do everything to get the best out of him.

“But here’s the thing I like most about this whole thing: for the first time in a long, long time, there’s a great deal of pressure on Marcus Rashford.

“He now has to turn up and deliver and I don’t mind seeing that.”

McCoist sends message to Rashford

Rashford could make his debut for Unai Emery’s men on Sunday when Tottenham travel to Villa Park for their fourth-round FA Cup clash.

McCoist revealed that he felt the best situation for the Three Lions forward was to sign for a club in France or Spain, only to end up doing the “opposite thing.”

The Rangers legend has warned Rashford that he must tell himself that he is “up for this challenge” due to the spotlight that will be placed on him at Villa.

“I initially thought in an ideal world the best thing for him would have been going to France or Spain or something like that,” McCoist continued.

“To get a little bit of peace. However, he’s done the opposite thing and fair play to him. He’s going to a club where there’ll be just as much scrutiny on him.

“I know you might say Manchester United are the bigger club than Aston Villa. However, the focus on Rashford and Aston Villa now will be immense.

“He’ll know that and by doing this, he’s saying; ‘Right, I’m up for this challenge.’ I’m really looking forward to seeing what will happen.”
