Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford scored the team’s goal in the derby defeat to City.

Marcus Rashford had a lot to say in the lead-up to the Manchester derby, with a Players’ Tribune post that divided opinion among supporters.

Rashford followed up by giving Manchester United the perfect start with a thunderbolt of a strike from outside the box.

United could not hold onto the advantage, with City scoring three second half goals to go on and win the game.

Marcus Rashford speaks out

Marcus Rashford broke his silence with a post-game message sent out via Instagram.

He wrote: “In a game full of emotion it’s a feeling like no other being a Mancunian and scoring in the derby.

“Ultimately we couldn’t get the win. Thank you to the fans for the support as always.”

There was a mixed reaction among supporters to his post, with some wanting more, and others more thankful of his contribution.

It is never easy for players to deal with a loss in a derby, and some would prefer they simply did not say anything on social media at all.

If one player in the squad was going to speak out, it was going to be Rashford, who said more in the build-up to the game than any other player.

He needs to follow this up next weekend with a big performance when United return to Old Trafford to face Everton.

Manchester United must respond

Manchester United have now suffered back to back Premier League defeats, with this derby loss preceded with a surprise collapse at home to Fulham.

Next weekend United face Everton at home in an early kick-off, and a victory is absolutely essential.

United have lost ground in an uphill battle to land a top four spot, and securing Champions League football appears to be a very difficult task.

Whether we ultimately get there or not, United fans want to see performances with a combination of quality and commitment between now and the end of the season.

One match at a time, getting three points at home to Everton next weekend is absolutely essential, and always in the spotlight, Marcus Rashford will need to lead from the front.
