Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has re-affirmed his commitment to the club – but he can’t win everybody over with words alone.
Marcus Rashford‘s career has been full of peaks and and troughs, following up his personal best 30 goal campaign in 2022/23 with a poor goal return of just five goals in 2023/24.
This season he has been reminiscent of 2021/22 Rashford, a player who lost his place in the Manchester United starting line-up to Anthony Elanga.
Rashford hit a low earlier this year when an ill-judged couple of nights out in Belfast led to him missing training, and the subsequent FA Cup fourth round game at Newport County.
The forward is back in United’s starting XI but has only one goal since returning, and has struggled since being shifted to play up front, with Rasmus Hojlund out injured.
Rashford posted on Players’ Tribune
Marcus Rashford wanted to get a few things off his chest this week, with a post on Players’ Tribune, where he put together an impassioned statement on his commitment to Manchester United, and accepted some of the criticism he had received.
He also said some of it had gone over the line, and that nobody should question his passion for the club.
An excerpt is here: “Listen, I’m not a perfect person. When I make a mistake, I’ll be the first one to put my hand up and say that I need to do better. But if you ever question my commitment to Man United, that’s when I have to speak up.
“It’s like somebody questioning my entire identity, and everything I stand for as a man. I grew up here. I have played for this club since I was a boy. My family turned down life-changing money when I was a kid so I could wear this badge.”

Manchester United fans split
Marcus Rashford’s post elicited a split response. His words resonated as a player who is clearly passionate about the club, but we have heard all this from him before.
What we want, are winning performances on the pitch, and while Rashford can speak out as much as he likes, there is a worry he is a little too concerned with the outside perception of him.
A match winning goal against City this weekend and an impassioned celebration would say more than any written post.

(+) After reading the Rashford article you have to feel for him. Being a United player he gets far more criticsm from the media and he also gets criticsm from his own supporters. Once upon a time we would stand by our own players
