Manuel Ugarte stepped up and put on a wonderful performance as Manchester United beat Leicester City 5-2.

It is not exactly how Manuel Ugarte would have planned his first few weeks as a Manchester United player, but there are signs that the 23-year-old is beginning to settle down at his new club.

Ugarte was United’s final signing of the summer after arriving in a £42m deal from PSG following the disappointing 3-0 defeat to Liverpool.

Erik ten Hag took a patient approach as he integrated Ugarte into the side, with the Dutchman turning to Casemiro and Christian Eriksen as a preferred midfield duo during the final weeks before he was sacked.

However, interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy put his faith in Ugarte to start in the Carabao Cup clash against Leicester City and he put on his best display yet.

Manuel Ugarte sends message after Man United masterclass

Old Trafford was raining goals on Wednesday evening with Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro scoring twice while Alejandro Garnacho also netted his sixth of the season.

However, while midfield partner Casemiro is getting all the praise, Ugarte was excellent against Leicester and his hard work in the heart of midfield flew under the radar.

He has not had the easiest of starts as a United player, but against Leicester, Ugarte showed exactly why he was signed.

Following the full-time whistle, Ugarte sent a short but sweet message to supporters via social media.

On Instagram, Ugarte posted: “This is the way. Let’s keep working together.”

United teammates Garnacho and Lisandro Martinez were quick to respond in the comment section.

Garnacho replied: “what a player”, while Lisandro Martinez’s comment translated to “Come on up, go!”

Manuel Ugarte can thrive under Ruben Amorim at Man United

United are closing in on Ruben Amorim becoming the new permanent manager with the Red Devils agreeing to pay his release clause at Sporting Lisbon.

That is great news for Ugarte, who has played under Ruben Amorim before in Portugal and is familiar with his 3-4-3 system.

Amorim’s “spectacular” style of play suits Ugarte’s role in midfield, and supporters can expect him to become a key player once the 39-year-old takes charge at Old Trafford.

Alongside the likes of Kobbie Mainoo, Casemiro and Mason Mount – United have an exciting midfield department who will all get a clean slate when Amorim is officially announced.
