Manchester United are closing in on appointing a new manager with Sporting boss Ruben Amorim nearing a move to Old Trafford.

Manchester United sacked Erik ten Hag on Monday morning as Ineos decided to make a change in the dugout.

United sit 14th in the Premier League table and have failed to win any of the first three Europa League games this season.

Ten Hag has paid the price with his job and United are looking to move quickly for his replacement.

Portuguese side Sporting have confirmed United’s move for Amorim, but he still took charge against Nacional on Tuesday night.

United are hopeful of thrashing out a deal soon and reports in Portugal suggest that Amorim wants to bring coaches in from Sporting to Old Trafford.

Omar Berrada role in Ruben Amorim deal

Amorim isn’t on board just yet but United have certainly put the wheels in motion for the Sporting boss to arrive soon.

Ineos have wasted no time in settling on Amorim and CEO Omar Berrada’s role appears to have been pivotal.

The Athletic report that Berrada is a ‘huge admirer’ of Amorim and has been a ‘key driver’ behind the move to appoint him.

United’s key decision makers – Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Sir Dave Brailsford, Dan Ashworth, Jason Wilcox and Berrada – are understood to be in collective agreement about Amorim.

Berrada appears to be the most passionate about landing Amorim though, hence this rather swift push for his arrival.

United are understood to have conducted background checks on Amorim recently having been given encouragement that he would be interested in the move.

Amorim has backing from United figures past and present

Amorim has worked wonders at Sporting, winning two league titles since a 2020 move from Braga.

There are some parallels to Ten Hag in the sense of winning titles outside of the top five European leagues and being dropped into a testing United situation.

Amorim certainly has the backing of former United figures though as he prepares to make his move to Manchester.

Former United boss Jose Mourinho has praised Amorim as a man and as a coach whilst Nani has hailed Amorim’s leadership qualities.

Even United captain Bruno Fernandes has raved about Amorim’s work at Sporting having watched his former club from afar.

Amorim faces a big challenge if he does take the reins at United but Berrada is seemingly convinced by him – and will hope to see him emerge as United’s very own Pep Guardiola having worked so closely with the Spaniard at Manchester City.
