Manchester United summer signing Manuel Ugarte has insisted that he understands the “responsibility” placed on his shoulders as a first-team player at Old Trafford.

Manuel Ugarte was heavily linked with the Red Devils in the summer and Manchester United were keen to add a defensive midfielder to their ranks.

United agreed a deal with Paris Saint-Germain that could reach £50.5m to bring Ugarte to Old Trafford on deadline day in the summer transfer window.

The 23-year-old Uruguayan midfielder was sporadically used by former United manager Erik ten Hag, who was sacked by the Premier League club late last month.

Erik ten Hag’s exit from Old Trafford and Ruud van Nistelrooy’s brief spell as interim manager unlocked more first-team minutes for Ugarte at the Red Devils.

Ruud van Nistelrooy, who was assistant manager under Ten Hag, deployed the ex-PSG midfielder alongside Casemiro amid Kobbie Mainoo’s absence due to injury.

Ugarte has made 11 appearances across all competitions for United in the current campaign, with the United star starting three Premier League matches in six fixtures.

Ugarte talks Man Utd and history

Manuel Ugarte is tipped to play a starring role under new Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim, who arrived at Old Trafford last week.

Ruben Amorim has succeeded Erik ten Hag in the Old Trafford hot seat and the ex-Sporting CP boss’ arrival marked the end of Ruud van Nistelrooy’s run at the club.

Ugarte played under the 39-year-old United manager at Sporting CP and could see more regular first-team action under the Portuguese.

Speaking to Inside United, the former Sporting CP and PSG player revealed his ambitions to win trophies with the Red Devils.

“We all know what it means to be United, with the history we have,” Ugarte said, as per Manchester United’s official website.

“The history, the fans, the mystique. I understand this responsibility and that starts with the day-to-day, being 100 per cent focused on the football and ready to win trophies.”

Ugarte on Man Utd legend and ‘transmit’ claim

Ugarte claimed that United matches “are always on” in his native homeland of Uruguay and that the rich history of the Premier League club is on full show.

The Uruguay international singled out United legend Darren Fletcher, who is currently a first-team coach, as someone who ‘transmits’ the ethos of the club.

“United matches are always on in Uruguay, so we all know the history they have,” Ugarte added.

“When you come here, and you are with people who are part of the history, for example, [Darren] Fletcher — they transmit what it means to be United.”
