Marcus Rashford could open up a vacancy if he leaves Manchester United for a new challenge.

Long-serving star Marcus Rashford can see the way his Manchester United career is heading, after being axed from the squad for the derby.

Rashford has admitted he is open to leaving the club, speaking just a fortnight away from the transfer window opening.

Marcus Rashford is United’s highest active goalscorer

After Cristiano Ronaldo left Manchester United in 2023, teammate Marcus Rashford inherited the mantel of being the club’s highest active goalscorer.

Rashford is current highest scorer on United’s books, with 138 career goals for the club. This places him 15th on the club’s all-time list, after he overtook Tommy Taylor’s tally earlier this season.

Currently Rashford still trails Ronaldo’s 145, and may never overtake him, when it had seemed like a matter of time.

But if Rashford leaves the club… who is next? Who becomes Manchester United’s highest active goalscorer? The answer is Bruno Fernandes.

United’s highest goalscorer after Rashford

Manchester United’s highest active goalscorer by a long way is current club captain Bruno Fernandes.

Fernandes leads the way on 85 goals – incidentally exactly the same as club legend David Beckham.

After that, there is a big gap. Just check the current scoring chart…

Rasmus Hojlund will have particular determination to launch up the scoring chart, as will Alejandro Garnacho if he can get back into favour.

But overall the list is a concern, with Casemiro, Antony and Harry Maguire among the list of United’s highest active scorers. Jonny Evans is even in there.

It shows the turnover that has been in the United squad in recent years, and that the players there now, need to be given time to really establish themselves.

Hojlund has a long way to go to reach Fernandes’ current tally, let alone the figures Rashford has achieved, which puts his scoring in perspective.
